The Adobe PostScript (AdobePS) printer driver 8.7 enables you to print documents from any application running in Mac OS 8.1 or later to a printer that includes Adobe PostScript Level 2 or Adobe PostScript 3.
AdobePS 8.7 provides the following new features:
- Support for PostScript printers equipped with a Universal Serial Bus (USB):
To set up a USB PostScript printer, start the Desktop Printer Utility and choose AdobePS from the pop-up menu in the New Desktop Printer window. Select Create Desktop Printer (USB) and click OK. From the Printer Configuration window, select the PPD file for your PostScript printer and the USB printer and click Create.
- Support for OpenType fonts:
AdobePS 8.7 supports OpenType fonts using Adobe Type Manager (ATM) 4.6.
- Support for a Transverse option for printers that support custom page sizes:
The Transverse option appears on the Layout panel of the Print window when a custom page size is specified. Selecting this option provides "long edge first" output.

To install AdobePS 8.7:
1. Download the AdobePS setup files to your hard disk, or insert the installation disk or CD-ROM into the appropriate drive.
2. Double-click the Installer icon.
3. In the Installer, click Continue and then click Accept to accept the licensing agreement.
4. Select Easy Install, which installs the following items:
- Adobe Printing Library
- AdobePS Read Me file (this document)
- AdobePS License Agreement file
- Printer Descriptions folder, containing three AdobePS extensions (DXTNs): Custom Page, Virtual Printer, and Watermark. ( This folder contains no PPD files.)
Note: If you obtained AdobePS from a printer manufacturer, the Easy Install option may install other files.
To print documents on a PostScript printer using AdobePS 8.7, you need a PPD file for the printer. PPD files contain information about the available memory and features (such as paper size and ROM-resident fonts) of the printer. Printer manufacturers develop and distribute PPD files for their printers and usually include the appropriate PPD file on a disk with the printer.
If you need the appropriate PPD file for a printer, contact the printer manufacturer. Adobe also distributes many PPD files as a courtesy, so you can also check Adobe's Web site at www.adobe.com/support/downloads/main.html.
