Set alpha transparency

In Macromedia Flash you can make an instance of a symbol slowly appear or disappear by changing the instance's alpha value. Alpha adjusts the transparency of an instance, from transparent (0%) to completely saturated, or visible (100%).

At the beginning of the Macromedia Flash movie, you want both instances on the Stage (the tiger instance and the text instance) to be completely transparent. The two instances will fade in gradually and separately as the movie plays. By frame 24, the tiger instance will be completely visible. By frame 36, the text instance will be completely visible.

Now you'll set the alpha properties to adjust instance transparency levels at individual keyframes.

1 Select frame 1 of the tiger layer, then click once on the tiger instance on the Stage to select it.
The Property inspector displays properties for the instance of the tiger symbol.

2 Select Alpha from the Color pop-up menu and enter 0% as the alpha value.
The tiger instance becomes transparent.
3 Select frame 24 of the tiger layer, then click once on the tiger instance to select it.
4 Select Alpha from the Color pop-up menu and enter 100% as the alpha value.
The tiger instance reappears.
5 Select frame 36 of the tiger layer and make sure that the alpha value of is set to 100%.
6 Select frame 1 of the text layer, then click once on the text instance to select it.
The Property inspector displays properties for the instance of the text symbol.
7 Select Alpha from the Color pop-up menu and enter 0% as the alpha value.
The text instance becomes transparent.
8 Select frame 16 of the text layer, then click once on the text instance to select it.
9 Select Alpha from the Color pop-up menu and enter 0% as the alpha value.
10 Select frame 36 of the text layer, then click once on the text instance to select it.
11 Select Alpha from the Color pop-up menu and enter 100% as the alpha value.
The text instance reappears in the last frame of the Timeline.
Your instance transparencies are now set. The tiger instance is transparent in frames 1 through 23, and becomes visible in frame 24. The text instance is transparent in frames 1 through 34 and becomes visible in frame 36. In the next section, you'll create motion tweens so that both the tiger instance and the text instance gradually fade into visibility.
