Importing Photoshop files into Fireworks

Fireworks can import native Photoshop (PSD) files and retain much of the structure of the PSD file, including layers and editable text. To compare the differences between the two applications, open a file in Photoshop and then import the same file into Fireworks. Running both applications simultaneously, you can perform similar tasks in each and experience their differences.

To import a PSD file into Fireworks:

1 Choose File > Import or File > Open and navigate to a PSD file.
The Photoshop File Options dialog box opens.
2 In the Photoshop File Options dialog box, choose:
Maintain Layers imports all the layers from the Photoshop document, and retains the layers' names.
Make Shared Layers sets all imported layers to be shared across frames in Fireworks.
Convert to Frames imports each Photoshop layer onto a separate frame in Fireworks. Layer names are not retained.
Text: Editable imports text as editable Fireworks text. Although it will usually be very close to its appearance in Photoshop, the text may vary slightly because of differences in text control and anti-aliasing between the two applications.
Text: Maintain Appearance converts the text to a bitmap when imported, retaining its exact appearance from Photoshop but removing its editability as text.
Use Flat Composite Image flattens the Photoshop file on import, giving you a single composite image in Fireworks. All layer information is discarded.
Note: You can set the defaults for PSD import by choosing File > Preferences and choosing the Photoshop File Conversion options on the Import panel.
3 Click OK.
