Explore the Tools panel

You can create and edit vectors and bitmaps without having to worry about modes in Fireworks MX. By selecting the desired tool from the Tools panel, Fireworks MX usually enters the appropriate mode automatically. At times, Fireworks waits to enter the appropriate mode until you begin using the tool. The reasons for this behavior are discussed later in the tutorial.

Fireworks has different sets of tools for different kinds of graphics. If you look at the Tools panel, you can see that it's divided into sections. The vector tools are designed for working with vector objects, and the bitmap tools are designed for working with bitmap images.

While most vector and bitmap tools will only function on the designated type of graphic, some tools will work on both types of graphics, such as the Eyedropper, the Paint Bucket, and the Gradient Fill tool, but they may operate slightly differently on each type of graphic.

In addition to vector tools and bitmap tools, the Tools panel is also home to other types of tools that function on both types of graphics, such as the tools in the Select section and the options in the Colors section; again, these tools may behave differently between vectors and bitmaps.

In the following sections, you'll use a variety of tools to create and modify vector objects and bitmap images.
