Creating bitmap effects in Flash 5

Modifying bitmap images with effects
In Flash, you can apply effects to bitmap images just as you can to vector shapes. Using the Effect panel, you can modify the tint, brightness, and alpha transparency of a symbol's instance. Advanced features in the panel offer even more control over color and alpha transparency. To gradually change color over time, you can tween effects.

To see how the Effect panel can modify an instance in different ways, let's start with a PNG file:

Note: PNG is an excellent format in which to import bitmap images because the image keeps its original alpha transparency. Additionally, PNG files retain their quality when compressed for export.

As evident in the example movies included in this article, the PNG file includes alpha transparency that makes the square image appear circular. With the image, you'll learn about the following topics:

Opening the Effect panel
Adjusting the tint
Adjusting the brightness
Adjusting the alpha transparency
Working with advanced effect settings
Tweening effects
