What is the Debug player?
Macromedia Flash MX includes an integrated debugger. To use this feature, you need to use debug-enabled (debug) versions of the Macromedia Flash Player. The debug versions of the Flash Player are identical to the non-debug-enabled (release) versions, except that the debug versions contain additional code to communicate with Flash MX.

What is the Standalone player?
The standalone player plays Flash movies exactly as they appear in a Web browser or an ActiveX host application, but without a browser. When you double-click a Flash movie, the operating system starts the standalone Flash Player, which in turn runs the movie. You can use the standalone player to make movies (projectors) viewable for users who aren't using a Web browser or an ActiveX host application.

What is the External (Test Movie) player?
The external (test movie) player plays Flash movies within the context of Flash MX. This is the player that is run when you select Control > Test Movie in Flash MX.

Installing the Updated Players and Player Installers

  • Debug Players
    • After downloading and uncompressing this file, place the contents of the uncompressed "Debug" folder into your \Players\Debug folder within your Macromedia Flash MX installation directory. (If you wish to keep your previous versions of these files, you should rename them first.)
  • Release Players
    • Likewise, place the contents of the uncompressed "Release" folder into your \Players\Release folder within your Macromedia Flash MX installation directory.
  • Standalone and Projector Players
    • The player files that are used by Flash MX to create projectors reside in your Flash MX\Players folder. You can create Release or Debug projector files depending upon which Standalone players are in this folder. To update these files:

      1. Make sure Flash MX is not running.
      2. After updating the Release or Debug players mentioned above, copy the following files from the Flash MX\Players\Release or Flash MX\Players\Debug folder to the Flash MX\Players folder, replacing the original existing files. On Windows, replace these files: SAFlashPlayer.exe, SAFlashPlayer.data, and SAFlashPlayer.rsrc. On Macintosh, replace these files: SAFlashPlayer and SAFlashPlayer.exe.
      3. All projectors will now be created with the updated player.

  • External (Test Movie) Players
    • The external player file resides in your Flash MX\First Run folder. To update this file:

      1. Make sure Flash MX is not running.
      2. Locate the current version of the External Player (Flash MX\First Run\Authplay.dll on Windows, Flash MX\First Run\AuthPlayLib on Macintosh).
      3. Rename your current External Player to something like "Authplay.old".
      4. Copy the new version of the External Player into Flash MX\First Run.
      5. The next time you launch Flash MX, the new version of the External Player will be copied automatically into the correct System folder on your machine.

For more information on how to use the installers in your \Players folder, and how to install and remove the updated players, consult the file \Players\Readme.htm within your Macromedia Flash MX installation directory.
