Using Publish Settings with Generator
Using text and fonts
Online and Offline Generator server
Extending Generator - SDK/API issues
Caching and Administration Servlet issues (Enterprise Edition only)

General

Complex ActionScript is now being processed properly by the Generator server. For more information about the old bug, see Flash 5 ActionScript not working properly with Generator (TechNote 15008).
Dynamic text replacement over 1024 characters will no longer cause Generator to crash. For more information about the old bug, see Text replacement limited to 1024 characters with dynamic text fields (TechNote 15150).
UNIX installers now require the capitalization of the letters in the serial number.
Generator 2.6 now has support for the Intel Pentium 4 processor. For more information, see Javaw.exe error when starting Generator 2 on an Intel Pentium 4 system (TechNote 16111).
The updated authoring extensions are included with the Windows installer. Solaris users will need to download the authoring extensions from Compatibility Matrix page.
Enterprise Edition Only
If you are upgrading from a previous release of Generator 2 Enterprise Edition, save the GenStats.log file located in the <generator parent>/Generator 2/admin directory on Windows or the <generator parent>/generator/admin directory on UNIX prior to removing the previous installation of Generator. After installation, copy the saved GenStats.log file back to the admin directory.

For more information, see Updating to Generator 2.6 Enterprise Edition (TechNote 15123).

Windows Only
Generator requires Java Runtime Environment (JRE) version 1.2.2 and automatically modifies the JRE locations in the JavaSoft Runtime 1.2 registry folders during installation. If there are other applications installed that rely on these registry entries to locate the JRE, they will use the JRE installed with Generator.
The Online Help navigation system may not work properly with older versions of Internet Explorer and Netscape browsers. If you experience difficulty with the navigation system, you may want to upgrade your browser to a newer version.
If Generator 2.6 is uninstalled, the link for the Using Generator help from within the Flash 5 Online Help system will no longer work.

General authoring

Mp3 sampling rates of 11k, 22k and 44k are now supported.
When using the Insert Sound object, sound files with a space in the name can now be used.
When using the Basic Charts, relative limits with only one data value now works properly.
Negative values are now properly displayed with the Bar and Stacked Bar charts.
Publishing with MP3 files > 18MB now works properly, but requires increasing the Java memory heap setting for the appropriate configurations (Online, Offline, Authoring).
The percent symbol (%) within a Generator ODBC datasource will now be properly interpreted by Microsoft Access drivers.
The Java memory heap allocation can now be set for the authoring environment. This is done by creating a system environment variable called "GEN_HEAP_SIZE". If this environment variable is not defined, the default setting of 128MB is used. For more information, see Setting the Java memory heap size (TechNote 16196).

Generator variables used in Flash 5 ActionScript must be treated as string values in order to pass syntax checking. To use Generator variables within ActionScript, enclose the Generator variable in double quotes (for example, "{genvar}").

For more information on the use of Generator variables with Flash 5 ActionScript, see Using Generator Variables in Flash 5 ActionScript (TechNote 14667).

Ticker objects are limited to a maximum step size of 51.

The Generator Environment Variable button is only supported in the main movie timeline and in the timelines of movie clip symbols. The Generator Environment Variable button cannot be used to provide Data Sources to Graphic and Button symbols.

For more information and suggestions for working around this limitation, please refer to Environment variables cannot be set in Graphic or Button symbol timelines (TechNote 14034).

Using Publish Settings with Generator

Output in the Real Player format cannot be created with Offline and Online Generator.
Entering a value for any parameter in Generator Publish Settings tab when no background color has been selected will cause the currently selected color in the color picker to be used as the background color. If no background color is desired, simply remove the entry from the Background Color field. No value is required.
Generator does not publish interlaced animated GIF files, even if you select the Interlace checkbox in the GIF Settings panel of the Publish Settings dialog box. When publishing animated GIF files, the Interlace checkbox is ignored and no warning is issued.
Dithering can only be set to Diffusion if the Web 216 palette type is selected. If an alternate palette type is selected (for example: Adaptive, Web Adaptive or Custom) and dithering is set to Diffusion, Generator will default to "None" without issuing a warning. Use Ordered Dither, instead of Diffusion, when working with a palette type other than Web 216.
When enabled for Generator templates, the Static setting for GIF playback will generate an animated GIF from multiple-frame templates that will play through once and stop. Use the #Static frame label, as documented in the Generator manual, to specify a single frame for static GIF output.
In Generator, the QuickTime publish settings are limited and do not provide the full capabilities of QuickTime 4. Generator outputs only a Flash Asset layer for QuickTime 4, not a full QuickTime movie. To work around this limitation, author a QuickTime movie in another application using the desired settings, and then load Generator content when the movie is played.
To specify an external font file for the Online Generator, use double back slashes (\\) or single forward slash(/) to separate directories.
Template (SWT) files served from an iPlanet 4.0 Web server cannot be viewed directly (for example outside of an HTML document) using Internet Explorer. Use an HTML document to display output from templates in Internet Explorer.
While some Generator objects and commands create content compatible with Flash 2 players, other commands use features supported only by Flash 3 (or later) players. However, Generator will not issue a warning when publishing Flash 2 version files containing features not supported in Flash 2. Therefore, if you are creating content for Flash 2 players it is recommended that you test your templates thoroughly and modify them as needed for compatibility.

Using text and fonts

Generator now supports all the same high ASCII characters that are supported within Flash. For more information, see Certain ASCII characters passed to Generator will not render properly (TechNote 15696).
Generator now correctly inserts the just the specified font characters for a dynamic text field. For more information, see Font include settings ignored by Generator (TechNote 15013).
When Flash 5's device fonts (_serif, _sans, _typewriter) are used in a static text field, the text field is converted to a dynamic text field on export to .swt format with a limited set of the optional field properties enabled.

Use the following techniques for best results:

Convert the text field to "dynamic" to retain control over line wrapping when Generator expands the template.
Using the Text Options panel, adjust dynamic text field properties to recreate the appearance of a regular text field:
1 Uncheck "Border/Bg".
2 Select "Multiline".
3 Uncheck "Selectable".
4 Deselect any "Embed fonts" selections.
Device fonts are not rendered if "Embed fonts" is set to include font outlines in the Text Options panel. If you use device fonts in a text field, deselect any "Embed fonts" selections.
The Flash player will not display text in an dynamic text field contained in a layer that is masked. Some Generator objects, such as Ticker and Scrolling List, utilize masked layers to crop elements outside of the object's bounding box. If you must use dynamic text fields within these objects, disable masking by setting the Mask To Box parameter to false.

For more information, please refer to Text in editable fields disappears when inserted using Generator objects (TechNote 14035).

Online and Offline Generator Server

It is now possible to use ColdFusion, Java, Java Server Pages or Active Server Pages to deliver an image as a binary stream to the Insert Jpeg, Insert Gif or Insert Png objects. For more information, see Images cannot be inserted as binary stream using middleware (TechNote 15640).

The Java memory heap size can now be set for Online and Offline Generator.

For Online Generator:

1 Open the JRun Management Console
2 Select Default Server>Java Settings>Java Arguments
3 Set the input for the appropriate value like "-Xmx128M" for 128MB.

For Offline Generator:

Use the new -mx option to set the heap size
Useage: generate -mx 128 (for a heap size of 128MB).

For more information, see Setting the Java memory heap size (TechNote 16196).

Offline Generator now has the parameter '-version' which will return the version of Generator that is installed. For more information, see What version of Generator am I using? (TechNote 16195)

The JRun Management Console (JMC) is configured with a default password of "generator2r3" for the "admin" user for all versions of the product except for Generator 2 Enterprise Edition (Release 3) for Linux. The default password for the JMC "admin" user for the Generator 2 Enterprise Edition (Release 3) for Linux is "admin". After completing the installation of Generator, the admin password should be changed.
Netscape browsers may reload animated GIF files or have difficulty loading GIF files served by Generator running with the iPlanet Web server. This problem can create unnecessary network traffic and distort the GIF file statistics in the Administration Servlet and Transaction Report.

Please refer to Why are GIF images continually reloading? (TechNote 14484) for more information on the problem and steps to resolve it.

Netscape browsers may continuously reload GIF files served by Generator if the server's system clock is set to a time earlier than the time on the client browser system. This problem is caused by a Netscape browser bug in which non-cached animated GIF files reload from the server every time the GIF loops.

Please refer to Why are GIF images continually reloading? (TechNote 14484) for more information on the problem and steps to resolve it.

Problems may occur when the Web server is running under a user that is not the same user or in the same group that Generator was installed with. To avoid this problem, either install and run the Web server and Generator using the same user or make sure that the user running the Web server has write access to the Generator directories.
Developer Edition only
The queueSize property is now supported in the Linux release of Generator 2 Developer Edition.
Developer Edition only
Templates that recursively call Generator using HTTP requests will time out and return an error message to the client. The Developer Edition processes requests one at a time, and each request must complete before the next request can be processed. When an HTTP request is found in a template, Generator passes that request to the Web server and awaits the response in order to complete processing of the template. If the request is for output from the same installation of Generator, the initial template will time out after 300 seconds waiting for the queued request to return a response. The Enterprise Edition is not subject to this limitation.
The edition of JRun 3.0 SP1 provided in this Generator package has been fully tested for performance and stability. For optimum performance and stability, we recommend that only the edition of JRun 3.0 SP1 bundled with the Generator 2 Enterprise and Developer Editions be used.

For more information on JRun, visit http://www.macromedia.com/software/jrun/.

Linux servers using DHCP may experience problems with FGFTP URLs. If you encounter such problems, troubleshoot your server configuration and the network information provided by your DHCP server.
If you are running Solaris Online Generator, there is a problem with a common screen saver program that is used with the Common Desktop Environment (CDE). If your system is set up to automatically run /usr/dt/bin/dtscreen when the user is idle, you may experience difficulties with it. You should avoid using /usr/DT/bin/dtscreen as a screensaver on the machine that is running Generator. You may want to do this by disabling the screen saver in CDE, using a different screen saver, or by not running CDE.

Extending Generator - SDK/API issues

The Font.setFftFile now supports relative paths. For more information, see Text does not display when using the setFftFile method of the SDK/API (TechNote 16081).

The methods that use mask parameters (insertObject and setCommandMask) now work properly. For more information, see Generator 2 SDK/API mask methods are not working properly (TechNote 15644).

One new method has been added to the SDK/API:

getColor: a test class method which returns color for a Text object

For more information on this new method, see Undocumented Methods for the Generator SDK/API (TechNote 14663).

Generator may crash if you call a release method before calling a method to add or define an instance of a class.
The documentation for the GoToFrame method in the Action class states that it is the equivalent of using the GoTo action in Flash, when it is actually the equivalent of using the GoTo and Stop action.
When using nested script hierarchies to build Generator Objects, you must call the undocumented method setFileVersion() in the Script class or the script hierarchy will collapse, and the contents of all of the scripts will be placed in the parent script.

For more information about setFileVersion() , including the method summary and code snippets showing nested and non-nested script hierarchies see the Tech Note Nested Script Hierarchies for Generator Objects require the setFileVersion Method (TechNote 14463).

Caching and Administration Servlet issues (Enterprise Edition only)

Generator 2.6 does not support the use of the Administration Servlet under Secure Socket Layer (SSL).
On Windows 98, you can open the Administration Servlet, but you cannot save any properties or make changes to your login.
When using the Administration Servlet, your browser should be set to reload the page on every visit. Failing to set this option may cause the Administration Servlet to remain stuck on the login page. This primarily applies to the Microsoft IE browser, but some versions of Netscape may also be affected.
The Administration Servlet requires the Flash player version 4 or later. The Administration Servlet does not work with earlier releases of the Flash player.
The transaction figures listed in the bottom half of the Transaction Report are 30-day averages, not actual counts.
The File and Media caches check file timestamp modifications independently of each other. To avoid confusion, it is recommended that you set the Check Modified Since option for either the File cache or the Media cache, but not both.
The Check Modified Since caching feature now works properly.
In order to reset the values listed in the File Type Statistics section of the Transaction Report, you must stop and restart Generator AND make a new file request. The statistics will reset to one with the first request made for a file type.
