Measuring performance

A J2EE application server offers many potential performance metrics, including web container performance, EJB performance, and JMS performance. However, according to a recent Gartner Group report, most Internet applications are web-centric, which means that all requests, regardless of whether they are ultimately serviced by a servlet, a JSP, or an EJB, travel through the web container. A slow web container will turn into a bottleneck and render all other high-performing system components meaningless. Superior web container performance is the critical component in an industrial-strength J2EE application.

This article describes tests that measure HTTP requests per second, which provides a simple, straightforward measurement of web-container performance.
