Macromedia Player Licensing

FAQ

For which platforms can I redistribute Macromedia Flash Player and Macromedia Shockwave Player for?
Both Macromedia web players may only be redistributed for the Microsoft Windows PC (including Windows 95, 98, 2000, NT, ME, and XP) and Apple Macintosh desktop operating systems. Other versions of Macromedia Flash Player and Macromedia Shockwave Player found elsewhere, including on the Macromedia website, at Shockwave, or on any other download site on the Internet, cannot be distributed under this agreement—including versions of the Macromedia web players for devices, Internet appliances, set-top boxes (STB), handhelds, phones, and Webpads, or for any operating system that is not an authorized operating system.
Can I license the Macromedia web players for Internet distribution?

The Macromedia Flash and Shockwave Player Distribution Agreement does not allow you to distribute the Macromedia web players by themselves from your website(s). If you'd like to distribute the Macromedia web players from your website, you must direct visitors to the Macromedia Web Players Download Center. We closely manage our Download Center to ensure your audience a smooth, free, and easy Internet download of our web players. To facilitate linking to the Download Center, we'll provide you with Get Macromedia Shockwave Player or Get Macromedia Flash Player logo buttons to display on your site. You can also open a separate window so your customers do not leave your site. Learn more about our Web buttons.

You may, however, distribute the Macromedia web players from the Internet in situations where the Macromedia web player installers are included as part of your site's installer package. For example, if your customers already download your installer package from the Internet, you can add the Macromedia Flash Player installer to your site's installer package.

What is the difference between licensing the Macromedia web players for my intranet, and distributing them on a CD-ROM or with an Internet application?

Many corporate users have developed specific content or applications using Macromedia web players for deployment on their company intranet system. The Macromedia Flash Player and Shockwave Player Distribution Program allows enterprises to distribute Macromedia Flash Player and Shockwave Player to all employees free of charge. Macromedia has an intranet-only license agreement designed exclusively for companies that wish to distribute Macromedia web players on their company's intranet system.

Both Macromedia Flash Player and Shockwave Player are also free to software developers who wish to distribute them on CD-ROM. In addition, software developers may distribute Macromedia web players through the Internet to end users (only if the web player is embedded in the licensee's installer which, in turn, is downloaded from the Internet). Macromedia requires specific marketing consideration in exchange for either of these methods of distribution, described more fully in the Macromedia Flash Player and Shockwave Player License and Distribution Agreement.

Does Macromedia offer technical assistance for Macromedia Flash Player and Shockwave Player distribution?

Macromedia provides free guidelines to assist you in your deployment of Macromedia Flash Player and Shockwave Player on intranets and physical media (i.e., CD-ROM).

Does Macromedia provide a Windows MSI installer that can be distributed via Microsoft SMS for Macromedia Flash Player within an Intranet?
Yes, Macromedia does provide a Windows MSI installer for the Flash Player distribution. Customers can license the Windows MSI installer by selecting the Flash Player only licensing option for Intranet distribution. Customers will then be sent a link to download the Windows MSI installer.
How are the licensed Macromedia Flash Player and Shockwave Player download installers different from those available on the Internet?

There is no difference between the licensed Macromedia web player installers and the installers available online at our Download Center. The licensed Macromedia web player installers deliver the same version that we deliver on our website.

I have a previous license for Macromedia Flash Player or Shockwave Player distribution. How will that be affected?

If you are currently holding a Macromedia Flash Player or Shockwave Player license, that license is still valid for the remainder of the license period. After your license expires, you must fill out a new license agreement using the online process outlined here. If you have questions about your license agreement, please contact Macromedia Customer Service.

Will either of the Macromedia web players automatically update to newer versions when they become available?

One of the benefits of Shockwave Player (7) and later versions is that it includes an auto-updating feature that guarantees users always have the latest version of Shockwave Player. If your users connect to the Internet to view Shockwave content and a more recent version of Shockwave Player is available than the one you're distributing, they will be prompted to update to the latest version of Shockwave Player.

The Macromedia Flash Player does not automatically update when distributed by itself.

Can I license Macromedia Flash Player separately from Shockwave Player?

If you're distributing the Macromedia Flash Player through the Internet (as part of your application's installer) or from an intranet, you may license Macromedia Flash Player separately. However, if you're distributing exclusively on fixed-media (i.e., CD-ROM), you're required to distribute the combined Macromedia Flash Player and Shockwave Player installer.

  • Example 1: You distribute your product exclusively on CD-ROM and require Macromedia Flash Player.

License Required: You must license both the Macromedia Flash and Shockwave Player installers.

  • Example 2: You distribute your product on DVD as well as from the Internet.

License Required: You must license either Macromedia Flash Player or Shockwave Player.

License Required: You may license Macromedia Flash Player but must remember to include it inside your product's installer.

  • Example 4: You require the Macromedia Flash Player for an intranet project developed in Macromedia Flash.

  • Example 5: You distribute your product exclusively on the Sega Dreamcast Platform and require Macromedia Flash Player.

License Required: You must license the Macromedia Flash Player installer only.

If I license either of the Macromedia web players, do I have to provide Macromedia with distribution reports?

You're only required to provide us with an estimate of the number of Macromedia web players you plan to distribute when you sign the license agreement.
