In 2013 Adobe’s Creative Technologies Lab, run by Dr. David Salesin, launched the Disruptive Innovation Group (DIG). Dr. Salesin’s idea was to embed a small crew of entrepreneurs into Adobe’s research labs, treat them like a start-up, and see what products they might come up with. In DIG, a small team of innovators and engineers has been working with Adobe’s scientists to produce a range of new products.
DIG’s mission is to disrupt Adobe using Adobe’s own technology. For years, Adobe researchers have been inventing the advanced features that professionals enjoy in Photoshop, Illustrator, Premiere, After Effects, and other media tools. DIG has access to both new research and Adobe’s classic IP, giving them free rein to mess with the status quo, take a LEAN approach and release apps quickly, far before they’re ready, before a company like Adobe would traditionally push something out.
Following are the first DIG explorations.
Twixt is seriously simple photo mixing, and the first project launched by DIG. You slide your finger over a subject in a picture to select it, and then blend it with another picture that serves as the scene. Remix subjects and scenes from the growing Twixt community collection or create your own - when others remix your Twixts, you'll see the variations show up next to your original creation. Jump in, it's fun!
Fixel fixes your pixels. Want to get rid of that street sign, power line, or garbage can from your otherwise flawless vacation photos? Just swipe over the ugly bits, press one button, and it's Fixel'd. Fixel uses the same advanced content-aware imaging technology found in Adobe Photoshop – but now you can use it on your phone or tablet, on the go. Fixel runs on any iOS 7 device, but is especially fast on newer devices like the iPhone 5S and iPad mini 2nd generation. Adobe Labs is releasing this technology demonstration as part of a research project: If you opt-in to our data collection, we'll use your images in a learning algorithm to tune our future imaging technologies. But if not, just enjoy the app!
