Teaming up with Photoshop Elements

Create a new Photoshop file optimized for video.

If you need to create a new still image for use in Adobe Premiere Elements, create a Photoshop file that is optimized for your project. In Adobe Premiere Elements, choose File > New > Photoshop File. Photoshop Elements creates a new file, using the Adobe Premiere Elements project settings. The file is also automatically added to the Media window in Adobe Premiere Elements. Edit the file in Photoshop Elements; the file is automatically updated in Adobe Premiere Elements. You can drag it from the Media window to the Timeline window as you would any other file.

One great way to take advantage of the advanced image-editing features in Photoshop Elements is to use the Custom Shape tool to create thought bubbles. Add text to the bubbles, and then save the file and return to Adobe Premiere Elements to add the image to your video.

step04_int
Export a single frame as an image.

You can use a frame in an Adobe Premiere Elements video as a still image in Photoshop Elements: Drag the current-time indicator through the timeline until the frame you want to use appears in the Monitor window. Then click the Export Frame button at the bottom of the Monitor window. To save the file as a BMP file, name it and save it. If you want to save it in a different format or with custom settings, click Settings and make the changes there.

To prevent flickering, video images are interlaced, with even lines appearing first and then odd lines. In video, we see this as a whole picture. However, still images should be deinterlaced to appear as expected. Use the De-Interlace video filter in Photoshop Elements for the best results.

step05_int
Edit a Photoshop image from Adobe Premiere Elements.

You can edit a Photoshop Elements image while you’re working on an Adobe Premiere Elements project. Select the Photoshop image in the Timeline window or the Media window. Then choose Edit > Edit Original. The image opens in Photoshop Elements. Edit the image and save it; it automatically updates in Adobe Premiere Elements.

When you use the Edit Original command, Windows XP opens the application that is associated with the file name extension. By default, Photoshop files open in Photoshop or Photoshop Elements. If an application other than Photoshop Elements opens, change the file name association in Windows Explorer. For information about changing file associations, see Windows XP Help and Support.
