Note: Fonts from Font Folio 11 may also be installed under Microsoft Windows 98, Windows Millennium Edition, and Windows NT® 4.0 with Service Pack 4 if you install Adobe Type Manager® (ATM™) Light 4.1 on your system. If using a PostScript® printer on Windows 98/ME, AdobePS™ printer driver 4.3 or later is recommended. If using a PostScript printer on Windows NT 4.0, AdobePS printer driver 5.1.2 or later is recommended.

Family information

History

Ryo is a Japanese kana typeface design composed of hiragana, katakana and some punctuation marks. Available in five weights--medium, semibold, bold, extra bold and heavy, Ryo Display has been specifically designed for use when setting copy in larger sizes, such as in headlines or posters. Supplied in the cross-platform OpenType® format, this special kana font can be used to supplement or replace the existing kana designs in existing Japanese fonts that contain full character sets. Creative professionals using the Japanese version of Adobe InDesign may use that program's Composite Font tool to easily combine Ryo Display with other typefaces.

Menu Names And Style Linking

In many Windows® applications, instead of every font appearing on the menu, fonts are grouped into style-linked sets, and only the name of the base style font for a set is shown in the menu. The italic and the bold weight fonts of the set (if any) are not shown in the font menu, but can still be accessed by selecting the base style font, and then using the italic and bold style buttons. In this family, such programs will show only the following base style font names in the menu:

The other fonts in this family must be selected by choosing a menu name and then a style option following the guide below.

On the Mac OS, although each font appears as a separate entry on the font menu, users may also select fonts by means of style links. Selecting a base style font and then using the style links (as described above for Windows) enhances cross-platform document compatibility with many applications, such as Microsoft® Word and Adobe PageMaker®, although it is unnecessary with more sophisticated Adobe applications such as recent versions of Illustrator®, Photoshop® or InDesign®.

One should not, however, select a base font which has no style-linked variant, and then use the bold or italic styling button. Doing so will either have no effect, or result in programmatic bolding or slanting of the base font, which will usually produce inferior screen and print results.

- The "languagesystem" tag 'DFLT' was changed to 'dflt' in the

"features" file.

o The following are the characteristics of these fonts:

- Based on the new "RyoKana" subset, which contains 214 glyphs, and

includes the following CIDs and CID ranges:
0, 633-635, 651-654, 657-658, 660, 842-1010, 7887-7888, 7891,
7918-7939, 7958-7960, 8264-8265, 8313-8316
This effectively means that CID does not equal GID for all of
these fonts.

- The Unicode 'cmap' is based on the new UniJIS-UTF32-H CMap file

(CMapVersion=1.001), aligned with Adobe-Japan1-5. Because there
are no mappings beyond the BMP, the UTF-32 'cmap' is not included.

- The OS/2.FSType value is set to 8.
- Includes Panose values in the 'OS/2' table.
- The ICF values in the 'BASE' table correspond to other full-set

fonts, as follows:

- The 'CFF ' table of all fonts has been subroutinized.
- The following sixteen 'sfnt' tables are included:

BASE, CFF, DSIG, GPOS, GSUB, OS/2, VORG, cmap, head, hhea, hmtx,
maxp, name, post, vhea, vmtx

- The following four GSUB features are included:

aalt, vert, vrt2
The 'vert' and 'vrt2' features are identical. The 'aalt' feature
is specifically designed to be a superset of the following two
GSUB features:
vert, vrt2
NOTE: No changes to the GSUB features have been made in this
release.

- The following six GPOS features are included:

halt, kern, palt, vhal, vkrn, vpal

Some glyphs in the font cannot be accessed unless you are using an OpenType-savvy application.
