You can create the interesting effect of an uneven texture in Adobe® Illustrator® by constructing a pattern that appears irregular when it tiles.

To achieve this effect, the edges of the pattern tile must match perfectly so that the tiling creates one continuous texture. These textures take time to finesse; once you’ve got a tile that works, try making different versions of it with different colors and stroke weights. If you need something quick, start with some premade tiles by loading the Pattern Samples libraries that came with your program. Then customize the tile for your own needs.

  1. Use the rectangle tool to create a rectangle the size you want your pattern tile to be.

For the most efficient printing and previewing, try to keep the rectangle between 1 and 2 inches square.

Do not use the rounded rectangle tool for this step. The rectangle must have square corners.

  2. Fill the square with the background color of your pattern. If you want the pattern to have a transparent background, fill and stroke it with None. Begin drawing the texture with just the shapes or lines that intersect the left side of the square. Select the square and the texture.

Add texture that intersects the left edge

  3. Check the View menu to make sure that the Snap to Point and Smart Guides options are turned on. Position the pointer on the lower left corner of the square. Begin dragging the artwork to the right; then press Shift and Option/Alt to constrain the move and leave a copy. When the cursor snaps to the lower right corner point, release the mouse button and then Shift and Option/Alt.

Slide a copy of the texture and rectangle to the right edge

  4. Select the right square and delete it.

  5. Continue drawing your texture by adding shapes or lines that intersect only the top of the square. When you have finished, select the rectangle and the top texture only.

    Delete the right square

  6. Position the pointer on the upper right corner of the square. Begin dragging the artwork down; then press Shift and Option/Alt to constrain the move and leave a copy. When the cursor snaps to the lower right corner point, release the mouse button and then Shift and Option/Alt.

  7. Select the lower square and delete it.

Slide a copy of the texture and rectangle to the bottom edge
