Phenogram Phenogram developed out of what Tom describes as 'combusted' motion pictures: "I shoot objects in motion and illuminated objects with large chunks of colour and texture, then edit these together to form a cohesive pattern," he explains. Phenogram is a series of Mac-only applets which aligns colour to sound: the RGB value of the screen is translated directly into sound. "Instead of reading one message, we pick up a series of 'flows' which in turn each reveal a reflection of the original idea, but not in its entirety," Tom says. |

"When trying to reassemble an image, we become aware of the noise and traces we create on the way." Tom used Premiere, Photoshop and Illustrator to create the applets: "It's important not just to use digital tools to edit, where you know and expect a certain result," he says. "It should be like cooking, where you add and change the ingredients where you go along, hoping the result will surprise you." |
