While the magazine has gained sophistication - and a loyal readership - since that first issue, intuition has continued to play a major role in its design. Take for instance the Volume IV, Issue 3 "smoke issue." While the editorial for this issue covered a wide range of subjects, the design was united by an ethereal and playful layer of "smoke." It wafted across type. It swirled around photographs. It drifted through the magazine, shifting its shape into surprising new forms as it moved.

Here's How He Did It

To create the smoke effect, Kadi relied on imagination, experimentation and a host of innovative techniques. Here’s how he pulled it off:

Photographed drops of ink in water to capture the look and feel of smoke.
Adjusted the curves in the smoke image to make sure that the background was completely white.
Selected the adjusted smoke image.
Used the selection as a mask for the image that would be put inside the smoke. Because the selection picks up the slight changes in colour and opacity when it’s applied as a mask, it keeps the same properties as the smoke.

Imported the smoke images into Adobe InDesign.

The result is both eerie and whimsical. Sometimes the smoke is grey and haunting. Other times, it’s a playful, fuchsia cloud. But whatever shape it takes, it seems both surprising and inevitable on every page.
