| Create a Smart Illustrator object. |
| In GoLive, click the Smart icon in the Objects palette, and then drag a Smart Illustrator object onto the page. In the Inspector, link the Smart Object to the SVG file you saved from Illustrator. GoLive opens the Variable Settings dialog box. |
| A Smart Object links the source file (such as the SVG file) with the optimized copy of the file (called the target) that is used in GoLive. You can change the content for a variable without ever having to leave GoLive. However, the target file remains linked to the source file; if you make changes to the source file, GoLive automatically updates the target file. |

| Customize variable content. |
| In the Variable Settings dialog box, select Use for each variable whose attributes you want to change. To change the content of a text variable, select it and type in the text box. To change an object's visibility, select the variable and choose Visible or Invisible from the pop-up menu. When you click OK, GoLive opens the Save For Web dialog box. |
| Do not select Use for variables you want to leave as they are. If you select Use for a text variable without entering text, the original text is deleted. You can change variable content later by selecting the Smart Object on the page and clicking Variables in the Basic pane of the Inspector. |

| Save a target file. |
| In the Save For Web dialog box, specify settings for the optimized copy of the image (the target file). You can specify settings individually or choose a set from the Settings pop-up menu. When you've saved the target file, GoLive displays the banner in the Layout Editor. |
| GoLive optimizes the image to ensure that it is in a format recognized by Web browsers and to reduce the file size so that the image can accommodate the bandwidth available to most Web users. GoLive saves the target file with the content you specified for the variables, leaving the original SVG file untouched. You can generate multiple copies of the same file throughout a Web site. |
