Aiko is a multidisciplinary artist and art director. During her Residency, she experimented with mixing analog and digital tools through augmented reality (AR) to create artworks based on her ongoing “What’s possible with my illustrations?” project. She offers online tutorials, sharing her knowledge to help build up others’ creative careers and to engage with the creative community. She is currently working on her magical AR pop-up book that she started during her Residency, which she hopes to publish in the near future.

He designs and creates an image nearly every day using a combination of new tools and technologies. He started his journey with more traditional forms of visual storytelling and has been spending the last several years exploring emerging tech.

Reality-Defying Photo Composites Master the Impossible

Juan José Egúsquiza is based in Brooklyn, New York, but he spends much of his time as a man of the world. From Paris to San Francisco to Barcelona to Lucerne and beyond, the Lima, Peru-born multimedia artist and Adobe Creative Resident makes his way across the globe with his camera in hand. While exploring, he captures ordinary moments with a click, and these images become the basis for what he calls “Impossible Stories”: brain-bending composites that challenge the way we relate to and interpret our surroundings.

Takuma spent his Residency developing self-made hardware and software systems to achieve new visual experiences. By collaborating with artists from different fields, he applies digital aspects to physical spaces and lights up the world with visuals that people have never before experienced.

On the go: Bengaluru’s crowd is the subject for this Japanese designer

Inspired by the crowd in the subway, Takuma Nakata rightfully named his installation as Walk, at DesignUp, a festival that explores the integration of technology and design, which ended on Saturday. In the city for the festival, Nakata came up with this installation in collaboration with Patricia Reiners, a user interface designer whom he met during the Adobe Creative Resident programme.

Berlin, Germany

Nadine is an XR artist based in Frankfurt and Berlin. She works at the intersection of digital and analog with the goal of creating experiences rather than images. During her Residency, she combined materials such as plastic and pixels to create work that was hand-cut, melted, or transformed into walkable augmented reality environments, and she invited the community to participate and engage with her artwork. She’s interested in new challenges, deep-diving in AR, and doing big-scale installations as well as projects in Japan in the future. Nadine has worked for clients such as Meta, Apple, Aerie, Google, Uber, and YouTube.

Accessible augmented reality tools unlock new experiences for art, education, retail, more

In 2020, Nadine began a collaboration with Scavengar, an AR creation and scavenger hunt storytelling platform, to build “Walk Your Day.” In light of the pandemic, the experience encouraged viewers to get up and have a productive and mindful start to their day through motivating visuals.

Craig spent his Residency creating a large series of light installations around the world called Light Capsules. He worked on improving his technique and optimizing his process for projection-mapping while simultaneously going deeper into the details of sign painting and typography. He says the Residency challenged him to get out of his comfort zone, tackle bigger projects, and explore new concepts — and he gained confidence in himself and his work.

Trail Blazers Playoffs

The trickiest design limitation was time. This needed to set up within seconds, play for 90 seconds, and then clear within seconds, properly clearing the court for tip-off. One concept quickly became a frontrunning idea: quickly deploy a cylinder to become a massive centerpiece canvas, augment it with 360º projection, then drop it.

Kelli spent her Residency exploring the question “What can paper do?” She tinkered with the material’s capacity to amplify sound, tell time, and work as a camera. She even took a few everyday tech objects and stripped them down to the bare minimum, rebuilding them in paper pop-up book form. Her text explains how simple structures can tap into the physical world’s invisible forces to make surprisingly sophisticated things happen.

Octavia, also known as Tink, is an artist who creates joyful work using vivid colors and a whimsical view of the world. Also a mental health advocate, she creates art as therapy to process her anxiety and depression and encourages others to discover the power of being creative as a healing and uplifting part of everyday life. She is the author and illustrator of The Joyful Journal, and she both works with clients and runs a busy online shop selling her work from her shepherd’s hut studio in the English countryside.

A graphic designer from Erie, Pennsylvania, with passions for street art, skateboard-smithing, and design, Chelsea spent her residency developing a line of longboards showcasing her artwork. She explored subjects including the public perception of female strength, individuality, sustainability, product quality, and the functional and accessible application of art, and she shared the stages of her process all the way through the production of her wood decks.

On Deck: The Art of Making Skateboards

Skateboarding didn’t come naturally to Chelsea Burton. “I always wanted to do it but totally sucked,” the graphic designer says of early days trying to find her balance. Learning to snowboard in high school helped, and when she discovered longboards not long after, she fell in love with the way they mimicked the movement of gliding down frozen mountains.

Syd used their Residency to build a creative community around their work where others could learn, share, and work alongside them. They explored the digital sticker store trend, and created the now-Facebook-infamous Trash Doves. They also took the time to figure out what kind of work they wanted to be making, and say they came away equipped to achieve their goals, maintain a productive career doing what they love, and contribute positivity and knowledge to the online creative community.

In early 2017, the flailing purple bird named ‘Trash Dove’ briefly and violently overtook the internet in a case of extreme social media meme virality. Trash Doves are my creation, and this nearly ruined my life.

Becky used her Residency to build and launch her online store, Chipper Things, a lifestyle and paper brand that celebrates play and delights in the ordinary. She began the year with her #100DaysOfGettingStarted project, in which she illustrated something new every day for three months. Much of that art can be found in Chipper Things and in dozens of stores across the US and Canada. She also finished her second book, The Roommate Book, an illustrated guide to roommate life that was published by Andrews McMeel.

Hallease, known by just her first name, is a filmmaker, digital storyteller, and creative entrepreneur based in Atlanta and San Antonio. She has produced original online content for PBS Digital Studios, Target, Google, and YouTube through her creative production company StumbleWell. She is a former YouTube Black Voices recipient. When she’s not telling stories online and sparking creative conversations with fellow artists through her podcast “Tryna Be Somebody,” she teaches everything she knows about storytelling via Skillshare. Her first comedy web series, “This Coulda Been An Email,” was featured at the BronzeLens Film Festival in Atlanta and is available to watch on YouTube. She’s currently working on producing and directing her first sci-fi/suspense short film, Separate the Wheat from the Chaff.

Tanya, also known as Guptanya, is a New York–based art director, multimedia artist, and former NASA engineer. In 2021, she became the first Indian-American to join the Adobe Creative Residency, having since directed more than 100 social editorials for Tom Ford Beauty, Disney, and more. In 2022, Tanya was honored on the Forbes 30 Under 30 list under the Art & Style category, and her work has been featured in Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, and Teen Vogue.

Laura is a conceptual portrait photographer from Germany who’s based in Rotterdam. They spent their Residency year exploring a different genre of photography. For their documentary project “Beauty of Age,” they interviewed and took portraits of 35 elderly people. Their goal was to show that there is so much more to age than what society sees, including beauty, life wisdom, and first-hand knowledge of our history. Laura’s Residency motivated her to give more talks and workshops, and they plan to create more documentary series as well as conceptual work that includes socially important issues and social taboo topics.

He captured photographs, made video content for the first time, and shared his process — all with the goal of making longer-form storytelling about unheard voices his primary work.

From that first journal, Christine built Everyday Explorers Co. into a successful brand of paper products that inspire documentation and creativity.

Julie is passionate about the intersection of food, technology, and the circular economy. Previously at Microsoft and IDEO, Julie applied to the Creative Residency to explore how we could “design out” consumer food waste and combat climate change. While she was a Resident, she designed a series of food-waste ventures while sharing about circular design through speaking engagements and workshops. Since then, she’s worked with clients including Imperfect Foods and the NY Sanitation Foundation and was named a Circular Economy Pioneer by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation. Based in Seattle, Washington, she now works as a senior product designer at Pioneer Square Labs, a startup studio and venture capital fund.

Her Residency work focused on designing for automation, and she went on to continue related work on the AI/ML team at Apple. She has since discovered her love of restoring old homes and revitalizing downtrodden areas and is currently at a startup designing software to make the antiquated process of homebuilding efficient, transparent, and affordable for both builders and homeowners.

An interaction designer based in Brooklyn, New York, Natalie is passionate about the intersections of design and philosophy. As a resident, she created digital solutions in the spaces of professional networking, charitable giving (with DonorsChoose.org), public resource access, and educational news (with Newsela.com). She also created a notebook detailing her creative process to help make UX design more accessible to the creative community. She plans to work in interaction design for civic and urban planning in the future.
