Explore symmetry, light, and shadows in your mobile photography.
Introduction
I have the privilege of working with Maui Taiko here on the amazing island of Maui.
I'm going to take photographs here with my iPhone.
Focusing on silhouettes and symmetrical composition
And I'm going to focus on silhouettes in this session.
I'm just using the iPhone, the iPhone app.
I'm going to work with different lenses here on my iPhone, nothing else.
But I'm going to position this with symmetry it's really what I love to work with.
I've got palm trees on either side, my performers I've got this amazing drum in the middle and these shadows which are casting here, and the shadows will even get better as it moves later into the evening.
But the key that's really nice, is the sun is just rising right over the shape of the drum here.
This is like a photographer's candy store.
Wherever you move, you got this perfect beautiful silhouettes.
I'm trying different configurations.
Experimenting with framing, movement, and burst mode
I first tried a symmetrical configuration and now I'm trying a single musician here.
And now what I'm going to try is to start a performance and then shoot in burst mode.
I found myself getting up moving around a bit, just to get different shadows and adjusting the focal length I went to the wide angle, for some distortion as I moved in on them, it's really cool.
And once again, I'm only using the iPhone app for all of this.
I'm even capturing some video.
Using different lenses, video, and changing light
Wow, the sun is just set here on Maui.
I've completed my first session here with my Taiko drummers.
I've experimented with a variety of lens configurations, and video and burst mode.
We learned to move around the subject, captured every angle possible.
Take more photos than you think you need, because you're going to capture just that special moment.
There you have it,
Key takeaways for silhouette photography
some great tips and techniques from the Russell Brown show on silhouette photography here on Maui.
What you learned:
Experiment with strong shadows, backlighting, lenses, and points of view to create impactful silhouettes with your mobile camera.
