Adobe Flash CS4 Professional introduced the Bone tool, which allows you to create armatures in your ActionScript 3 FLA files. An armature is a series of symbol instances or shapes connected by bone selections. Shapes within the armature move together based on their settings in relation to the next section in the armature—inverse kinematics (IK). Armatures can be used to create animated tweens between pose frames. The timelines can be controlled at runtime to create a range of interactive animation effects.

This sample demonstrates an armature in the form of an interactive crane. Use the arrow keys to move the crane and drop the hook.

Note: For more information about IK, read the section "Animating with the Bone tool" in Creating animation in ActionScript 3.
