Retail Design Manager | Vans

Jillian Maddox

Jillian Maddox is a designer with over a decade of experience creating branded experiences for global companies. With a background in interior architecture and a passion for purpose-driven design, she brings a thoughtful, human-centered approach to every project.

Jillian earned her BFA from California State University, Long Beach, where she focused on interior architecture—learning the fundamentals of space planning, building codes, and designing within existing infrastructure. While still a student, she began freelance work with Vans, which led to a long-term relationship with the brand and sparked her career in environmental design.

Her path has included both agency and in-house experience, allowing her to build a diverse creative skill set—balancing conceptual design with time management, collaboration, and production. Today, as a manager of Retail Design and Environments at Vans, she leads the creation of retail concepts and store environments, working closely with product, marketing, and fabrication teams to bring immersive spaces to life.

One of Jillian’s most meaningful projects was the 2022 Vans US Open of Surfing, where she helped lead the design strategy with a strong focus on sustainability. For her, the project reflected a larger shift in the design industry: recognizing the environmental impact of temporary builds and pushing for more responsible creative practices.

In addition to her design work, Jillian earned a certification in Construction Project Management through CSUDH, gaining a deeper appreciation for what it takes to bring ideas into the built world. Outside of work, she’s a dedicated mother, wellness enthusiast, and community gardener. She believes that the best design is rooted in empathy, cultural awareness, and the willingness to learn from others.

Jillian is passionate about mentoring and supporting early-career creatives. She understands the pressures of entering the creative industry and hopes to encourage new designers to lead with curiosity, collaborate with intention, and never underestimate the value of their own perspective.
