Fun classroom graph activities

Graphs help students visualize numbers, relative values, and percentages and introduce them to the elementary concepts of higher-level mathematics such as trigonometry and non-planar geometry. Are you looking for activities to help you incorporate graphs in your classroom? Check out our recommendations below.

Circle graph.

Ask students to track the amount of time they put into doing various activities outside of school: time online, watching TV, eating/snacking, extracurriculars, etc. Then have them put those into a pie chart. They will be able to see how their time breaks down — how much time they spend on one activity versus another, all as part of a whole.

Bar graph.

A great way to engage students in learning bar graphs is to have them create bars with small snacks — M&Ms, popcorn, marshmallows, etc. But don’t let them eat them yet. The anticipation of enjoying their favorite snacks keeps students engaged. And with a fun, delicious activity like this, students will remember what they learned.

Line graph.

Show your students a short portion of a movie or TV show in short two- or three-minute increments. Then, take a poll to find out who their favorite character is. As the results come in, use that data to create a bar graph.
