5 businesses using packaging design to deliver a visual feast

If you’re a business with a product to market, good packaging does not just serve a functional purpose. Getting the aesthetics right is often the key to enticing new customers, increasing perceived desirability of your product and elevating your brand’s identity. After all, when it comes to consumption habits, even the best of us will judge a book by its cover.

We’ve picked out five brands from around the region that have used packaging design to deliver a visual feast. See how they did it below.

1. Saybons

(Singapore)

Saybons, a popular French casual dining chain in Singapore, sought a rebrand inspired by the Art Deco era. Its refreshed food packaging designs were crafted to reflect the style of the period, and combine French colours, motifs and geometric patterns for a look that’s eclectic, bold and vibrant. Illustrations of ingredients used in their food were also produced in Matisse-style cut-outs for more charm.

2. Maison Marou Mooncakes

(Vietnam)

By Rice Creative for Maison Marou

Mooncake packaging is traditionally extravagant, but much of it is wasteful and difficult to recycle. Maison Marou Mooncakes wanted to create a stunning but thoughtfully designed box that would stay out of landfills, even after they’d served their original purpose. The designs are inspired by local craft as well as traditional motifs, and capture the spirit of Mid-Autumn festivities.

3. Earnest Kombucha

(Korea)

The flavours of kombucha are best described as zesty, refreshing and robust, and this was the inspiration for the design of Earnest Kombucha’s aluminium cans. The result is creative but simple typography, bright colours and whimsical motifs representing its main ingredients. We like the quirky alligator iconography, the focal point of the design that makes it instantly recognisable and speaks volumes about the personality of the brand.

4. Kiwi Manuka Mānuka Soap

(New Zealand)

By Kiwi Manuka

Creative Cloud apps used: Illustrator, Photoshop, Lightroom

Kiwi Manuka soap is packaged with a look that reflects a clean but sophisticated product experience, with an earthy and elegant colour palette apropos of its all-natural ingredients, including a range of herbaceous oils. The hologram foil-printed text juxtaposed with the silver pouches gives a delicate but eye-catching look, and we like how it presents the premium handmade quality of the product. Each soap also comes with a unique thank you message on the back.

5. Four Pillars Labels

(Australia)

By Interweave Group for Four Pillars Labels

Four Pillars is known for pushing the envelope, whether that’s through its gin, partnerships or designs. The result: a distinctive brand aesthetic that is sleek, elegant and edgy. The labels and packaging on each of its products are the result of going back to the drawing board each time to create a look that captures the individual characteristics and flavor of each gin, while also staying true to the overall brand.
