Build in accessibility – and be ready for business in Europe.

To ensure people with disabilities can enjoy the benefits of the online space, from June 28th, 2025, the European Accessibility Act (EAA)* will make it a legal requirement that certain products and services – and the way they are marketed – are accessible to more people.

The new European Accessibility Act, in brief.

87 million Europeans have a disability or temporary impairment, such as a mobility or visual impairment. For those people, the EAA will make products such as smartphones and computers, and services like websites and mobile services, easier to use.

This means that organisations based in the European Union (EU), as well as companies selling to EU customers, may need to consider the requirements of the EAA. In other words, it may be important to be aware of where your customers are located, not just where your business is based.

What it means for the UK.

While the United Kingdom is no longer bound by EU legislation, it often aligns with EU standards for smoother trade and regulatory compliance. This means the UK may consider updating its own accessibility regulations.

Reviewing the accessibility of your website and product interfaces could be an ideal way to improve the customer experience and futureproof your online presence at the same time.

How it could impact you.

There may be fines or penalties for failing to comply with the EAA, depending on the severity of the infraction. To avoid them, a complete accessibility and inclusivity audit of your website and the products and services you sell may be needed. It is advisable to seek legal advice to understand your compliance obligations under the EAA.

But it’s not all about fines; there are benefits too. By embracing these standards, your business will be more accessible to audiences with these requirements. It could also help you extend your customer base, enhance the reputation of your brand, and even deliver better SEO.
