ST files are container files that you’re most likely to encounter when streaming videos and Blu-rays. They’re used to contain high-quality video content of broadcast quality, ready to stream online and on disc.

What is a ST file?
A ST file or a Video Transport Stream (ST) file is container format used to store compressed video data with MPEG-2 (.MPEG). They’re seen on DVD and Blue-Ray discs but also store streamed or broadcast video content.
Each ST file represents different parts of video content stored on the disc. For example, you may come across a series of individual ST files within a video, named ‘filmname1.ts’ ‘filmname2.ts’, ‘filmname3.ts’ etc.
Because of this segmented structure, it means that ST files are typically larger than other video file formats. However, they do represent broadcast-quality video, suitable for the very highest streaming standards.
History of the ST file.
ST files were developed in 1995 by Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG) — an international workgroup that sets the standards for media compression and encoding. At first, ST files saw use on broadcast systems like DVB, ATSC and IPTV.
However, as time went on, they adapted for usage with video cameras, video recorders and video players.
ST files were extremely popular during the peak of the DVD and blockbuster phenomenon in the 1990s and 2000s. However, as technology has progressed, they became less common.
It wasn’t until the breakthrough of Blu-ray and the demise of HD DVD that left Blu-ray standing, that ST files enjoyed a resurgence. This format uses ST for streaming high-quality film and TV content on that medium.
How to use ST files.
Store Videos.
ST files store MPEG-2-compressed video data. They are often seen on DVDs and Blu-ray discs in a series of multiple .ST extensions. Such files contain audio and video data, ready for broadcast.
Compress Video Data.
ST files make use of the MPEG-2 codec to compress video data. They’re compressed using lossy compression, which reduces the size of the video and the audio data it contains, in order to reduce the overall file size. However, this can come at the cost of a reduction in quality.
Stream or Broadcast Video.
ST files can be played on most modern devices, such as a laptop or PC. They’re also streamed across a multitude of media players that support this format, such as Windows Media Player.
Pros and cons of ST files.
Now you know what ST files are and what they’re used for, it’s important to weigh up whether they’re perfect for your next video production or are maybe too large a file size for your project.
Pros.
- Compatible with various media players. The ST format is compatible for playback on a range of players, including VLC Media Player, Corel Video Studio and Audials One.
- Good video quality. Because ST files rely on the MPEG codec, they have a similar video quality to more popular formats like MP4 — offering an alternative for you.
Cons.
- Can’t share online. Many social media and video sharing platforms like YouTube and Facebook do not support the ST file format. So, sharing ST video files online often requires a format conversion.
- Acquires a significant amount of storage space. ST files are large in size and can quickly eat up hard-drive or cloud storage space.

How to open a ST file.
As mentioned, you can open a ST file with several media players. VLC Media Player is a popular choice because it runs on all versions of Windows. It is also available on Mac.
To open a ST file in VLC Media Player simply:
- Download or install VLC media player. If you already have VLC media player installed, check to make sure it’s updated with the latest version.
- Launch VLC Media Player and select “open file” from the menu in the top left-hand corner.
- Locate your ST file and drag in into VLC Media Player.
You can also convert your ST file to a .mpeg extension to open it with Microsoft Films, Windows Media Player and Apple QuickTime Player.
How to create and edit a ST file.
You can create and edit a ST file online using various video editing tools, including Adobe Media Encoder and also Adobe {{premiere}}.
To create and edit a ST file in Adobe {{premiere}}, you’ll need to convert the ST file to a file extension format supported by Adobe. To do this, please ensure that you are using a secure, reputable third-party converter, to avoid file corruption.
Once your file has converted, simply open a new project and select the newly converted file to open in {{premiere}}. Once done, you can start editing your file.
