San José Semaphore – 2006 Contest

How the code was cracked

On August 14, 2007, the solution was announced. The team of Mark Snesrud and Bob Mayo—two research scientists who submitted their solution on September 8, 2006—was honored for being the first (and only) team to break the code.

The solution: The San José semaphore had been broadcasting the full text of Thomas Pynchon’s 1966 novel, The Crying of Lot 49.
