How often should you really post?

How often is too often when it comes to posting on social media? If you're a business owner or content creator trying to grow your presence online, you've probably wondered about the "right" number of posts to publish each week. To help answer that, Adobe Express surveyed 433 business owners about how often they post, which platforms and formats work best, and how much pressure they feel to keep up. What we found offers a revealing look into the rhythms of modern content marketing.

Posting behavior: How often business owners share content

In the survey, the majority of business owners agreed that the ideal posting frequency is once per day, or seven times a week. That goal is more ambitious than realistic, especially for small business owners with limited time and resources.

See how often and where most business owners post and what they believe is the sweet spot per platform.

how often business owners post content

Weekly posting was the most common rhythm among business owners, with 44% sharing content once per week. Daily posting was less common, with only 18% doing so. Another 21% posted monthly, and 18% said they shared content even less frequently than that.

Among those who use TikTok professionally, 33% said they posted daily, which is more than on any other platform. Business owners were most likely to post on X, Instagram, YouTube, and Facebook weekly, while LinkedIn users most often did so once a month.

When it comes to planning, 28% of business owners admitted that they didn't plan their content ahead of time. One in four said they typically scheduled content one to two days in advance, while 20% plan content only a few hours before posting.

The burnout and pressure of content creation

Behind every post is a creator navigating deadlines, expectations, and the pressure to keep up. Business owners feel the weight of staying visible online.

business owners behavior towards social media

Overall, 44% of business owners reported feeling pressure to increase how often they post, while 24% said their audience expects daily content from them. Social comparison added to the pressure. Almost half (48%) said seeing other brands' activity made them feel like they weren't posting enough.

This pressure adds up. Seven in 10 business owners felt burnt out by content creation, and 68% said they've taken a posting break because of fatigue. Adding to this, 63% noticed a drop in followers or engagement when they posted less, and another 63% felt pressure to post every day. By platform, TikTok was the most intense. The majority of business owners who used it reported posting burnout (88%) and pressure (81%).

The content formats and timing that drive engagement

Not all content performs equally. Knowing what resonates can help you post smarter, not harder. While single-image posts were used most frequently, quick videos got the highest engagement.

types of content business owners typically post on social media

Single-image posts were used by 62% of business owners. Text-based content followed at 44%, while short-form video formats like Reels and TikToks were used by 39%.

But quick videos had the edge in performance. Thirty-four percent of respondents said short-form video was the format that got the most engagement. Timing matters, too. Saturday was the most engaging day of the week, according to 41% of business owners. If you're unsure what or when to post, posting a short video at the start of the weekend might be your best bet to connect with your audience.

How to create consistently without burning out

The best posting schedule is the one that works for you. While daily content might seem ideal, most business owners settle into a weekly rhythm that better fits their time, energy, and resources. Rather than chasing frequency, aim for consistency that feels sustainable.

Try to plan ahead, reuse content that performs well, and lean into formats that produce strong results. When you focus on what connects with your audience and what supports your creative flow, content creation becomes something you can consistently maintain.
