RAW files contain the greatest amount of information possible. For example, JPEG files typically capture 256 levels of brightness. RAW files can touch more than 16,000. More levels of brightness means smoother transitions and fuller, richer images that are more detailed and less likely to wash out.
Yes. Some camera manufacturers don’t use it, but others have adopted it as a new standard. These include Leica, Hasselblad and Pentax. Most cameras will also shoot in JPEG and
TIFF.
This is a practical solution used by numerous photographers. Many programmes will also let you convert to DNG as you import. It does take some time to convert files — and keeping RAW and DNG copies of every photo will double your storage requirements. Some photographers just convert select photos.
