Macromedia Flash Video Kit for Dreamweaver Release Notes

This document addresses known issues in the release that are not discussed in the Macromedia Flash Video Kit documentation. This document may be updated as more information becomes available.

About Macromedia Flash Video Kit

Welcome to the Macromedia Flash Video Kit.

The Flash Video Kit lets you add video to your website without any special technical knowledge. The kit makes it quick and easy to add streaming or progressive download video through a Dreamweaver MX 2004 extension. Video deployed with the kit can be viewed instantly with Macromedia Flash Player, the world's most ubiquitous rich client, making the video instantly accessible to about a half a billion web users.

The kit includes the following components:

  • The Flash Video extension for Dreamweaver.
  • A special version of Sorenson Squeeze® that converts common video file formats into Flash Video format (FLV).
  • A free 15-day trial of Flash Video Streaming Service powered by VitalStream® that allows customers to harness all the power of streaming Flash Video without the need to install and maintain their own servers.
  • An introductory guide to deploying video online.

Information about Sorenson Squeeze and VitalStream

For information about Sorenson Squeeze, see Sorenson Squeeze Support.

For information about VitalStream, see VitalStream FVSS Lite Support.

Supported languages

The Flash Video extension for Dreamweaver is available in English only. However, the extension is supported on French, German, Chinese (Simplified), Chinese (Traditional), Italian, Japanese, Korean, and Spanish operating systems.

Issues for both Windows and Macintosh for Flash Video extension for Dreamweaver

The following issues for the Flash Video extension for Dreamweaver occur in both Windows and Macintosh:

  • If Flex Builder is installed on the computer where you are installing the extension, then do the following to ensure that you install the extension in Dreamweaver rather than Flex Builder:
    1. Start the Extension Manager.
    2. In the Extension Manager, select your installed version of Dreamweaver in the Product pop-up menu.
    3. Enable the On/Off checkbox next to Flash Video in the list of extensions.
  • You cannot use the extension to add more than one piece of Flash Video content on a given web page.
  • FLV content created with Sorensen Squeeze 3.0 or earlier, or using Flash Video Exporter 1.1, will not play when added to a page using this extension, because those encoders do not support metadata. To create FLV content that you can use with this extension, you must encode your FLV content using Sorensen Squeeze 4.0 or Flash Video Exporter 1.2, which do add metadata.
  • If you use a site root relative path for the FLV file, then the Upload Media, Detect Size, and Preview in Browser functions do not work.
  • If you use an absolute URL for the FLV file, then the Upload Media function doesn't work.
  • The Detect Size function doesn't work for live video streams under Streaming Video.
  • The Detect Size function doesn't work if the video is playing in the browser at the same time.
  • The extension doesn't work if the FLV file name includes spaces.
  • The FLV file appears in the Files panel with either a Dreamweaver document icon or no icon.
  • For Streaming Video, don't use commas in the stream's name. Commas in the name of a stream will be converted to other characters.
  • If you set the buffer time for an FLV to a value greater than the video's duration, the video will not play until the entire video has been buffered.
  • If you use the Save As function in most web browsers on a page that uses Flash Video Player, the browsers do not save all the related files.
  • When an FLV file with a set buffer time loads in a web browser, there is no progress bar showing how long it will take to load the video.
  • If you download a page containing Flash Video (Progressive Download or Streaming) from a remote server in Dreamweaver, and you want to view the video locally, then you must manually download the dependent files (such as the FLV file and the FLVPlayer_Progressive.swf file) using the Remote view of the Files panel.
  • To change the width and height of a video's skin independent of the width and height of the FLV file, uncheck the Constrain option in the extension's dialog box, and then specify video dimensions that are larger than the minimums but that maintain the original source media's aspect ratio.
