Follow these tips to work out how you’ll get from where you are to where you want to be, one task at a time.

  1. Write down your big goals. They could be as extreme as completing a triathlon, as exciting as planning a wedding, or as mundane as saving enough money to buy a new vacuum cleaner. Write down all the major goals you have.
  2. Understand timing. Map out when you need to achieve those goals. Events like that triathlon or wedding already have set dates, but less deadline-centered goals that involve saving money or losing weight are best parsed out weekly or monthly. If you can save $10 a week, for instance, you should have that $100 for your vacuum in 10 weeks. There, you’ve now set your goal deadline.
  3. Think it through. Now that you have deadlines for your goals, what do you need to do to achieve them on time? Build a complete list of everything involved in reaching those goals — no task is too small. For your triathlon, that might mean finding a training plan and mapping it onto a calendar. For your wedding, this includes everything from buying a dress to picking a cake.
  4. Piece it together. Once you have the full picture of what’s needed to achieve your goals, item by item, make to do lists for each day or week leading up to your goal deadlines. This way, you can slowly make progress toward those goals without feeling overwhelmed.
