CREATIVE GENERATIVE AI
Adobe Firefly vs. DALL·E: Create more by letting your imagination run wild in Firefly.
Brainstorm at lightning speed with just a few steps and turn your dreams into AI creations.
The benefits of using Adobe Firefly to generate AI art.
- Create images with a simple text prompt and use tools in Firefly’s browser-based interface to adjust the style, theme, composition, and more.
- Following the Adobe AI ethics principles of accountability, responsibility, and transparency, Firefly’s first model is designed to be commercially safe by training on content from Adobe Stock, openly licensed content, and public domain content where the copyright has expired.
The basics of generative AI.
Much like AI (artificial intelligence) uses data to solve problems, generative AI taps into data to create something based on a request. These requests are usually simple written prompts, like “Victorian wallpaper pattern of lemons and flowers.” Using a large language model, or LLM, the generative AI uses these words to generate your text prompt into artistic images, stunning video, and much more.
Whether you want to see a motorcycle driving on the moon or a realistic product photo of a sneaker, you can come up with a dream and experiment with it in a generative AI model like Firefly.
Differences between Adobe Firefly and Dall·E.
Adobe Firefly encompasses all the creative generative AI models that will show up in Adobe products. Firefly’s first model trains on a database of Adobe Stock images, openly licensed content, and public domain content where copyright expired to turn text descriptions into AI creations. Starting with models that allow you to generate an image from a text prompt and adding an image to text, Firefly can create a watercolor of a sailboat at sunset or turn the letters of your favorite pizza parlor’s name into an actual pizza.
And that’s just the beginning. Many AI image generators do just that, generate images. Adobe Firefly will eventually provide many generative AI tools. The models that let users change the mood of a video, remove distractions from photos, test out design options, add texture to 3D objects, and add new elements to illustrations are all in the works. As is the capability to do even more tweaking and personalizing to Firefly AI creations in other Creative Cloud tools like Adobe Express, Photoshop, and Illustrator.
Adobe Firefly builds on the Adobe commitment to the creative community.
With decades of commitment to the creative community, it was vital for Adobe to enter the AI art space by keeping creators at the forefront. Firefly does not train on the personal content of Adobe Creative Cloud customers.
That’s why Adobe Stock imagery (in accordance with the Stock Contributor License agreement), openly licensed content, and public domain content with an expired copyright is the only content Firefly trained on. By doing so, it means whatever you create in Firefly is designed to be commercially safe.
Taking it a step further, Adobe is working on a compensation system for Stock contributors for when Firefly becomes available to everyone. The goal is to create a generative AI model that benefits creatives, helping speed along creativity in the most responsible ways.
How Adobe Firefly can help your creative work.
Adobe Firefly is ideal for saving time on any and all visualizations. Create and communicate concepts quickly, bringing ideas to life in minutes instead of hours. Want to see what “a living room with a lot of plants” looks like with red couches that stand out instead of white upholstery? Adjust your prompt and you’ve got a second series of mock-ups in seconds.
If a picture is worth a thousand words, Firefly can help you generate dozens of different ways to express your ideas whether you’re a seasoned graphic designer working on a big pitch or just someone with a cool idea for a t-shirt.

Ways Adobe Firefly can help you speed up your work.
With text to image generation and a variety of tools to change the look of the results, Adobe Firefly can help you get inspired when you:
- Brainstorm ideas for the cover of your band’s concept album.
- Create surreal architectural designs to inspire settings in your graphic novel.
- Explore different compositions and concepts before creating editorial imagery.
- Try out potential angles for camera shots prior to going on-location for a photoshoot.
- Ask to see an iguana in a pink suit because it’s been a long week and you can use a laugh.
How to use Adobe Firefly.
Ask and you shall receive. It’s that easy. Type what you want to generate into the user-friendly Firefly interface and four illustrations of “cottage overgrown with ancient trees” will pop up. Or adjust your prompt to “red cottage overgrown with ancient trees, background is night” to craft an image that features every detail from your imagination.
Fine-tune your AI art in Adobe Firefly.
After you get your initial results, you can adjust the images Firefly generates by selecting from different content types, styles, colors, tones, and compositions.
Try adding to your text prompt.
The text prompt “man in a beanie hat and glasses” will generate images of exactly that. But add more descriptive words to your prompt and Firefly will generate more specific results. Update your prompt to “Portrait of futuristic Asian man in a beanie hat and glasses, apocalyptic” and you’ll be given images featuring all the details in your new search.
Adjust the content type.
When you first add a prompt to the text to image feature, the content type is set as None and Firefly will give you initial results. From there, you can select Photo, Graphic, or Art to see options that look more illustrative or realistic.
Refine your results with Styles and more.
There are many tools to tweak your generated images in Firefly. From pop art to 3D art, the Styles menu lets you adjust results based on art movements, themes, and even materials like metal to change the texture of an image. Try for a drawn look or ask for photorealistic images.
Play with Color and Tone and Lighting options to change the feel of your results, and even select different compositions if the angle of your final image is not what you’re looking for.
By selecting multiple options from these menus, you can create an infinite range of unique generated images.

Try Adobe Firefly text effects.
It can be helpful to see what’s possible before you spend time adding design elements to wordmarks, logos, and other text treatments. That’s where Firefly can help you ideate before you create.
From lava to icicles and driftwood to leafy greens, the Text effects feature in Firefly can add effects and styles to any bit of text. Type in the word you want to see and the effect you want to cover the letters and watch Firefly go to work. You can further adjust your results by selecting different fonts, how closely the effect fits the text, and adjusting the background color that frames your stylized letters.
There’s no better way to understand the possibilities of Firefly than to give it a test drive. Explore what Firefly can help you create.
