Questions? We have answers.

Generative AI photo editing is a process in which you can create and refine images using tools that leverage artificial intelligence to complete the task. To start the editing process, many of these tools require a prompt describing the content you want to generate, such as “red beret” or “lush urban park filled with tourists, trees and dogs.” The tool then uses algorithms and large datasets to generate outputs that resemble the description. Examples of such tools include the Adobe Firefly web app and features powered by Firefly within Photoshop, like Generative Fill and Generative Expand. Generative AI photo editing can include tasks like creating all new images, adding or removing content from preexisting images, replacing a background, expanding an image and much more.

There are many advantages to using generative AI photo editors. You can use generative AI photo editors to automate rote, multistep editing tasks that take away from more creative work. Use them to quickly resize images for different formats and to expand the borders of images or to add new elements to photos, saving time searching for the perfect image in a stock image repository. You can also use generative AI photo editors to brainstorm and find inspiration. The output from your prompts may surprise you, taking your work in a new direction. You can let your imagination run wild, experimenting with prompts, tweaking previously used ones and exploring the results you get.

Photoshop is not free, but you can sign up for a free trial and try the full version of the app, including all of the generative AI photo editing features like Generative Fill and Generative Expand, for seven days. Or, try editing images with the free version of the Adobe Firefly web app.

Because generative AI photo editing helps condense the amount of time it takes to perform basic editing tasks like expanding the borders of an image, resizing and retouching photos and beyond, not only can you complete these edits in less time than before, but you can also use the time you save for more creative work. And generative AI photo editing isn’t just for those who are working primarily on editing images — it can be enormously helpful to small business owners, social media marketers, project managers and others who need to produce and edit images for their work but don’t have a big photo budget.

Generative Fill and Generative Expand are designed to be safe for commercial use. This helps ensure you can push the bounds of your creativity, confidently, knowing that the current Firefly generative AI model was trained on licensed content, such as Adobe Stock and public domain content where copyright has expired. While generative AI features are available for use in the Photoshop (beta) app, the content generated in the Photoshop (beta) app may not be used for commercial purposes.
