Digital Sculpting Tools and Features.

In Substance 3D Modeler, you have access to several tools and features to help you sculpt 3D models. Some of the most common features include:

Desktop and Virtual Reality. Modeller has a standard desktop user interface and a different VR interface that can be used at any time with a VR headset. Creators can use one or the other or even a mix of both in the same project.

Layers and scoping. Layers are how you organise content in Modeller. Using layers allows you to sculpt and edit sections of a model without accidentally changing other portions of the model.

Voxel-based modelling. This 3D modelling approach bypasses the restraints of geometric modelling. Topology is handled post-design automatically on export. To learn more about this sculpting method, you can read up on it on our previous post, How does Modeller work?

3D Sculpting Workflow.

Sculpting in 3D can take a lot to see an idea come to life. Here’s a basic outline:

1. Conceptualisation and planning. A great model often starts with some brainstorming, sketching or mental planning. Gathering references is also a great way to prepare yourself.

2. Prep your chosen software. The 3D sculpting tools you choose will depend on several factors including personal preferences, skill level and budget constraints. Set up the scene and import references if you are using them.

3. Blocking out the sculpt. Sculpting starts with a basic shape of digital clay, so blocking out basic shapes is the best place to start.

4. Refining the sculpt. Gradually refine the basic shapes to add more precise details. How you approach this step will change depending on the software you are using, as well as the type of model you’re sculpting. Hardedge modelling or organic modelling have unique approaches.

5. Texturing and painting. If necessary, UV unwrap the model for texturing. If you’re using Substance 3D Modeler, this is done for you automatically when you export the model. Import it into Substance 3D Painter to apply materials or paint directly onto its surface.

6. Rendering and export. Depending on how you intend to use your sculpt, the last thing to do is either export it for further use elsewhere or stage and render the final images or animations.

Remember, this workflow can vary based on individual preferences and specific project requirements. That said, it’s a great place to start if you are learning 3D sculpting for the first time.

Frequently Asked Questions

IS THERE A LEARNING CURVE ASSOCIATED WITH USING 3D DIGITAL SCULPTING SOFTWARE?

3D modelling and 3D sculpting has a steeper learning curve than other tasks in 3D design. 3D sculpting helps mediate this difficulty by simplifying the modelling process as much as possible by offering the user digital tools that closely replicate sculpting with clay in real-life. Learning these tools and how they work is still a necessity, however you don’t have to worry about the technical details as much, are free to sculpt the model with an emphasis on visual acuity, with the software handling mesh management behind the scenes.

DOES ADOBE HAVE A 3D SCULPTING PROGRAMME?

Yes. Adobe Substance 3D includes an app called Substance 3D Modeler. Modeller allows creators to sculpt 3D models with digital clay. It supports desktop and virtual reality workflows, which offers a more hands on feel than working with the traditional mouse and keyboard. Modeller is available in the Substance 3D Collection plans.

DO YOU NEED A TABLET FOR 3D SCULPTING?

While some apps may offer tablet compatibility, it is generally not required to use a tablet in 3D sculpting. Due to the robust nature of 3D design software, most users prefer to work on 3D from a desktop computer. Adobe Substance 3D Modeler offers a desktop and VR mode for sculpting but is currently only available on Windows PCs with a dedicated GPU.
