Go from a little to a lot.

Use Generative Fill to quickly add and remove content from images. Explore new ideas and create dozens of high-quality concepts quickly.

Plus, push your Generative Fill creations even further with new features in the Photoshop (beta) app. Upload a sample image to get results closer to the content you’re looking for with the Reference Image setting, and create variations of your favorite generated images with Generate Similar.

New background? No problem.

Change the background in photos seamlessly with generative AI. Simply select the background, type in a text prompt, and transport your subject from a local city street to a location across the globe.

Plus, try the even faster, simpler Generate Background in the Photoshop (beta) app — just type in a description to instantly swap your scenery for a new one that matches the lighting, shadows, and perspective of the subject.

Go beyond the borders.

Easily expand an image in any direction with Generative Expand. Select and drag the Crop tool beyond an image’s original borders to the desired size, and then click Generate. The expanded canvas will automatically fill with new content that seamlessly blends with the existing image. Or type in a prompt to get a more specific result.

Dream it. Type it. Create it.

Go from a prompt to whatever you imagine right in Photoshop. With Text to Image, you can quickly ideate and create new assets — anything from places to animals, and more. Plus, the Reference Image setting lets you upload an image to inform the style of the generated content.

Look sharper than ever before.

New Enhance Detail gives you the option to boost sharpness and detail on your Generative Fill creations. Get results with greater clarity that blend more seamlessly with the existing image. Available in the Photoshop (beta) app.

Remove and replace content in a few steps.

Get rid of unwanted elements with ease using Generative Fill. Just select the object you want to remove and then click Generate (without using a prompt) to fill the area with new content that seamlessly blends in with the surrounding image. Or use a description to replace stray strangers with something specific, like foliage.

And now you can customize your results even more with features like Reference Image — now available in the Photoshop (beta) app — which generates content based on a sample image uploaded by you.

How to edit photos with AI in Photoshop.

Use the latest generative AI features to create incredible images in fewer steps than ever.

1. Open or download Photoshop.

If you already have Photoshop, open the app. Make sure it’s updated to the latest version, so you get all the latest generative AI features. If you don’t have a Creative Cloud plan that includes Photoshop, start a trial and download the full version of Photoshop to try free for seven days.

2. Import an image.

Go to File > Open to locate and select the file you want to import, or choose New file from the Photoshop Home screen to open a new workspace and then click Import image in the Contextual Task Bar.

3. Add and remove content.

Use Text to Image to zip through ideas and create new assets from a descriptive prompt.  Select Generate Image from the Contextual Task Bar, toolbar, or go to Edit > Generate Image. Type a detailed description into the prompt field and select a content type. Use the Reference Image setting to upload a sample image and get results closer to the style you’re looking for. You can also set style effects to customize results even more.

To add or remove content within an image, use any selection tool to select any part of your image, and then click on Generative Fill in the Contextual Task Bar and type in a prompt to replace it with new content. Or leave the field blank to remove content.

4. Create a new background.

Swap your subject’s scenery for a whole new background by selecting the subject, and then reversing the selection in the Contextual Task Bar. Type in a prompt of what you want to replace the old background with and click Generate to see options.

5. Extend an image.

Use Generative Expand to enlarge your image and add new content. Select the Crop tool from the toolbar and click and drag the corner or edge handles to resize your image, and then click Generate in the Contextual Task Bar to fill the blank space with new content that blends in with the existing image. Or enter a prompt before clicking Generate to tailor your results.

6. Download and share.

Once you’re happy with your image, go to File > Export > Export As and choose a file type and image size. You can also add optional information such as metadata. Once you’ve set your preferences, click Export, select where you’d like to save your image, and click Save. Your image is now ready to share on social and beyond. Need to reformat your image to fit different needs? Use Generative Expand to quickly adjust the size and fill in complementary content where you need it.

More AI-powered Photoshop tools.

There are many more tools in Photoshop that make work faster and easier with the power of AI. Here are a few:

  • Remove tool: Replace unwanted areas in your image with similar content by simply brushing over what you want to remove.
  • Curvature Pen tool: Draw straight lines and smooth curves intuitively, and then easily modify them.
  • Match Font: Find matches for fonts you love in your images or photos.
  • Preserve Details 2.0: Resize images without introducing distortions to important details and textures.
  • Sky Replacement: Change the sky in your image in a few clicks and Photoshop will automatically mask and blend the replacement.
  • Object Selection tool and Refine Edge: Create precise selections and masks with ease.
  • Neural Filters: Reduce larger workflows to just a few clicks with a library of filters powered by machine learning.

Questions? We have answers.

Generative AI photo editing is a process in which you can create and refine images using tools that leverage artificial intelligence to complete the task. To start the editing process, many of these tools require a prompt describing the content you want to generate, such as “red beret” or “lush urban park filled with tourists, trees, and dogs.” The tool then uses algorithms and large datasets to generate outputs that resemble the description. Examples of such tools include the Adobe Firefly web app and features powered by Firefly within Photoshop, like Generative Fill and Generative Expand. Generative AI photo editing can include tasks like creating all new images, adding or removing content from preexisting images, replacing a background, expanding an image, and much more.

There are many advantages to using generative AI photo editors. You can use generative AI photo editors to automate rote, multistep editing tasks that take away from more creative work. Use them to quickly resize images for different formats and to expand the borders of images or to add new elements to photos, saving time searching for the perfect image in a stock image repository. You can also use generative AI photo editors to brainstorm and find inspiration. The output from your prompts may surprise you, taking your work in a new direction. You can let your imagination run wild, experimenting with prompts, tweaking previously used ones, and exploring the results you get.

Photoshop is not free, but you can sign up for a free trial and try the full version of the app, including all of the generative AI photo editing features like Generative Fill and Generative Expand, for seven days. Or, try editing images with the free version of the Adobe Firefly web app.

Because generative AI photo editing helps condense the amount of time it takes to perform basic editing tasks like expanding the borders of an image, resizing and retouching photos, and beyond, not only can you complete these edits in less time than before, but you can also use the time you save for more creative work. And generative AI photo editing isn’t just for those who are working primarily on editing images — it can be enormously helpful to small business owners, social media marketers, project managers, and others who need to produce and edit images for their work but don’t have a big photo budget.

Generative Fill and Generative Expand are designed to be safe for commercial use. This helps ensure you can push the bounds of your creativity, confidently, knowing that the current Firefly generative AI model was trained on licensed content, such as Adobe Stock, and public domain content where copyright has expired. While generative AI features are available for use in the Photoshop (beta) app, the content generated in the Photoshop (beta) app may not be used for commercial purposes.
