Refining the layout

You decide to rearrange the position of the layers—a process sometimes called "wire-framing" a page. You select a layer by clicking its border, grab the selection handle that appears on the layer's upper left corner, and drag the layer elsewhere.

When moving layers around, you align them by having them snap to a grid. To make layers snap to a grid, choose View > Grid > Snap To Grid. To view the grid, choose View > Grid > Show Grid. To change the grid's spacing, choose View > Grid > Edit Grid, and enter the new settings.

To achieve pixel-point accuracy, you specify the precise page coordinates of a layer. First, you display rulers along the left and top of the window to guide you. To turn on the rulers, you choose View > Rulers. Next, you specify the layer's coordinates. To specify the coordinates, you select the layer by clicking its border, then open the Property inspector (Window > Properties). In the Property inspector, you specify a L (left) and T (top) value to set the coordinates of the top-left corner of the layer.

For more information on using layers for page design, see "Using Dynamic Layers" in Dreamweaver help (Help > Using Dreamweaver), or on page 407 of the Using Dreamweaver 4 book.

After refining your design and arranging the layers to your liking, the page looks as follows:
