At its core, focus is about prioritising what matters most and consistently directing time and energy towards it. In business, strong focus shapes decisions, drives productivity, and ultimately impacts profitability.
Yet maintaining focus day to day requires intention, and it isn’t always straightforward. In fact, one in ten business leaders have lost over £100,000 in revenue due to a lack of focus, highlighting just how closely attention and performance are linked.
But in which areas do business owners in the UK lose focus the most? What is the impact of this? And are there any tactics for getting back on track?
We conducted a national survey to explore this topic further, uncovering the biggest distractions, the areas of business that feel the impact, and practical strategies used to regain focus. We’ve also included some top tips for maintaining concentration, to help leaders streamline workflows, make faster decisions, and turn focus into real business impact.
We found that financial strain is the biggest burden, with 51% of leaders citing inflation and wage demands as the top distraction that affects performance. 43% also highlighted personal pressures, while 39% mentioned issues with team members such as poor attendance.
And when focus slips, performance follows, with 28% reporting reduced efficiency and consistency day-to-day. In terms of the departments that suffer the most as a result, it’s operations (25%) followed by finance (21%).
Nearly two thirds (60%) say that maintaining a healthy work-life balance helps prevent unnecessary distractions, creating conditions for clearer decision making. Regular fitness and wellbeing outside of work is also crucial for 28% of those we surveyed.
Just over half of leaders also said that focus is maintained through building a team of reliable people who support their decisions.
What’s more, when improving focus is prioritised across a business, almost half say that it has led to financial growth, including pay rises and promotions.
Breaking things down by age group revealed some interesting insights too. Almost two-thirds of business leaders aged 18-24 have lost up to £10,000 in revenue from a lack of focus, and 19% of those aged 25-34 have lost over £100,000. Across all age groups, financial pressure is the most common distraction, showing that economic stresses can affect leaders at every stage of their career.
Over a third (35%) of those in the 55-64 age group noticed team burnout due to bad decision-making at a senior level, compared to just 18% of people in the 45-54 age group.
The areas of businesses most affected by distraction also differ by age. For instance, almost two-thirds of 18-24-year-olds say marketing departments suffer the most, compared to just 2% of those 55-65. 35% of 55-65-year-olds believe that operations departments struggle the most when focus slips.
Age also influences the strategies leaders use to regain their focus and boost motivation. We found that younger leaders are least likely to prioritise work-life balance (20%) and instead rely on networking (40%) to stay informed and up to date with industry trends. Alternatively, those 55-64 are the most likely to protect their focus through work-life balance, ensuring they have enough down time to return to work with a renewed perspective.
Focus doesn’t just differ by age, as our survey revealed some notable regional trends too. We found that in Yorkshire, 25% of business leaders have seen a revenue loss of over £100,000 due to drops in focus. Meanwhile in London, the constant pressure of competition is affecting focus the most, with 43% of business owners struggling to block out competitor noise and home in on their goals.
Financial stress remains a key concern across regions, with 68% of those we surveyed from Scotland pinning this as their main distraction. At the same time, leaders in Northern Ireland highlight the upside of focus, with all of those we surveyed reporting that improving business-wide attention has led to growth targets being met.
Approaches to maintaining focus seem to vary regionally too, with leaders in the North East being the most likely to prioritise work-life balance (89%), giving themselves time to switch off, relax, and return to work with a sharper focus.
In Wales, 78% of leaders focus on motivating staff and keeping teams aligned with overall business goals, demonstrating a people-led approach.
