How to remove an extra blank page at the end of a Word document.
We’ve all encountered the issue where there’s a random blank page at the end of our Word document, but no matter how times we hit the backspace button, it doesn’t want to budge.
Most of the time, this is because the final paragraph of text is taking up the last space on the page – so Word pushes the final line break to a new page. Luckily, there is a fix for this.
To delete that extra blank page at the end of your Word document, you’ll need to make sure the end paragraph fits completely on the preceding page – line break and all. You can usually do this by shortening one or two sentences.
Alternatively, you’ll need to focus on the empty paragraph on the blank page and look at ways to move this on to the final page. To do this, you can try one of three things:
1. Change the font size of the empty paragraph.
- First things first, you can try reducing the font size that’s assigned to this empty paragraph. This in turn should move the line to the preceding page, which will delete the blank page from your Word document. To do this: Press Control+Shift+8 if you’re using a Windows computer or Command+8 on a Mac. This will highlight all the paragraph marks on your Word document.
- Use your mouse to select the relevant paragraph mark.
- Select the “Font size” box and type 01. Then, press Enter.
- The paragraph should now fit on the preceding page, which will remove the unwanted blank page.
- Press Control+Shift+8 again to hide the paragraph marks.
2. Resize the bottom margin.
If the paragraph still doesn’t quite fit on the preceding page, you can try resizing the bottom margin to make it smaller:
- Click the “Layout” tab in the top menu.
- Select “Margins”, then “Custom Margins”.
- Set the bottom one to something small, like 0.7cm.
3. Remove any page breaks.
If the paragraph mark has a bullet next to it, you may need to turn off the “Page Break Before” option. To do this:
- Right-click on the empty paragraph.
- Go to the “Home” tab in the top menu
- Select “Paragraph Settings” and go to the “Lines and Page Breaks” tab.
- Uncheck the “Page Break Before” button.
- Close the dialogue box and check it’s remove the blank page.
