Expand your images with Generative AI.

Use Generative Expand to effortlessly expand images in whatever direction you wish. Simply select and drag the Crop tool beyond the image's original borders to your desired size, then click Generate. Your new expanded canvas will automatically fill with new content that blends with the existing image. For a more specific result, you can also type in a prompt.

Text to image.

Create something magically from scratch. Simply write a description in the text prompt and set your style preferences to create an entire scene. Generate numerous new ideas in minutes, allowing you to effortlessly explore image options and creative directions. The Reference Image setting lets you upload an image to inform the style of the generated content.

Enhance photo sharpness.

Using Generative Fill, the enhance detail feature, improves sharpness variations, allowing you to blend more seamlessly with images.

  1. Generate an object using Generative Fill.
  2. Navigate to Properties panel > Variations to select your preferred variation.
  3. Hover over the variation in the Properties panel to reveal the Enhance Detail icon, then click on it.
  4. Select the tool and highlight the section you want to change.
  5. When the text box appears, write what you want to appear in the selected area.

The results will be refreshed with increased sharpness and detail visible in the document.

Get Creative by Changing Elements.

With AI photo editing tools, like Generative Fill you can change specific elements in your photos. Gloomy skies become brilliant blue or pop with hues of pink. When editing photos from a Halloween party, you could swap out background furniture for ghosts to create spooky snaps with AI editing.

Changing elements works just the same as the generative fill image editor tool:

Select the tool and highlight the section you want to change.

When the text box appears, write what you want to appear in the selected area.

1. Open or download Photoshop.

If you have Photoshop installed, open it and update to the latest version for the newest AI photo editing features. If not, start a 7-day free trial. To experience the latest AI features, ensure you download the Photoshop beta app.

2. Importing an image.

Go to File.

Select Open to find and choose the file you want to import or select New file from the Photoshop Home screen to open a new workspace.

Click Import image in the Contextual Task Bar.

3. Removing and adding content.

  • Select Generate Image from the Contextual Task Bar, toolbar, or go to Edit > Generate Image.
  • Enter a detailed description in the prompt field.
  • Choose a content type.
  • Use the Reference Image setting to upload a sample image for results closer to your desired style.

To remove or add content within images:

  • Select the area you want to modify using any selection tool.
  • Click Generative Fill in the Contextual Task Bar.
  • Type a prompt to replace the content or leave the field blank to remove it.

4. Changing your background.

To change the background on your image:

  • Select your subject and reverse the selection in the Contextual Task Bar.
  • Type a prompt for the new background and click Generate to see options.

Alternatively, use Generate Background in the Photoshop (beta) app:

  • Click Generate Background in the Contextual Task Bar.
  • Type a description (or leave it blank) and click Generate to see new background options that match the subject's lighting, shadows, and perspective.

5. Extending an image.

Using Generative Expand:

  • Select the Crop tool from the toolbar.
  • Click and drag the corner or edge handles to resize your image.
  • Click Generate in the Contextual Task Bar to fill the blank space with new content that blends with the existing image.
  • Optionally, enter a prompt before clicking Generate to customise your results.

Download and share.

Once satisfied with your image:

  • Go to File > Export > Export As.
  • Choose your desired file type and image size, and add optional metadata if needed.
  • Click Export, select your save location, and click Save.
  • Your image is now ready to share. To reformat it for different needs, use Generative Expand to adjust the size and fill in complementary content.
