For this tutorial, I'm in the audio workspace.
The quality of your audio has a significant impact for audiences.
And in this sequence, I've got a voiceover that's accompanying a visual, and the audio cleanup is complete, but I'm not satisfied with the sound of the voice.
I'm gonna add some clarity and power to make it more impactful.
Let's listen to a little of the audio.
And you'll hear that the microphone didn't quite capture as much detail as we'd like.
I'm gonna press the up arrow in the timeline panel to go to the beginning of the clip and then space bar to play.
Drink to me, only with thine eyes, and I will pledge with mine or.
It sounds okay, but I think we can do better.
So I'm gonna select the clip here in the timeline panel, set the dialogue audio type, and the control I'm interested in is this one, Clarity.
I'm gonna turn on Dynamics and just to test the results with this effect, I'm gonna hit Play and as I planned, I'm gonna drag the slider around until I hear the quality of sound I want.
I use the space bar to play.
Leave a kiss, but in the cup, and I'll not look for wine.
The thirst that from the soul doth rise doth ask a drink divine.
I think that's a good balance 5 on the Clarity control.
You'll want to use professional monitors or headphones when you're working with audio, because the results can be pretty subtle but still impactful.
If I go to the Effect Controls panel, right here, you can see that adjusting the Dynamics slider has actually added a dynamics processing effect to the clip and it's configured the effect as well.
If I click Edit here, in the Effect Controls panel, you can see there's access to all of the detailed controls for this effect.
In fact, that effect applies a kind of precise audio compression, reducing or expanding audio level at different amplitudes.
And the term compression in this context means reducing the difference between quiet and loud sections of audio.
Now that I'm happy with the clarity adjustment, I'm going to use the parametric equalizer effect to fine tune the audio manually.
I'll go to my Effects panel, and I'll just start typing the name of the effect to find it in the search box and drag the effect onto my clip.
Here in the Effect Controls panel, I'll click Edit to get into the detailed settings.
The parametric equalizer graph has frequency on the horizontal axis and amplitude on the vertical axis.
And the blue line with multiple control points represents the adjustment at particular frequencies.
I'd normally make adjustments during playback, but I'm gonna stop and start so I can explain what I'm doing.
Just to illustrate I'm gonna take this third control point and drag it pretty high around the 1 kilohertz range and I'll just use the space bar to play a little of the audio.
But might I have Jove's nectar sap?
Well, of course, I'm now overriding the audio you can see that the peak indicators are on in the audio meters, but you can also hear the quality of the audio has changed.
There's a lot more of that middle frequency range information.
Now I'm gonna go to the Presets menu, and I'm going to choose the vocal enhancer preset.
I'll just click into the timeline panel and press the up arrow to jump to the beginning of the clip and select the clip again to go back into my settings.
And now I'm gonna playback so you can hear the result of the preset.
Drink to me only with thine eyes and I will pledge with mine.
I think that's an improvement.
It's subtle but again, if you listen with the right headphones or monitors, you will hear the difference.
This preset has switched off the first and second bands.
So I'll turn those back on, so I keep the shape of the line.
And then I'm gonna take this third control point to try to locate the frequencies that I want to adjust.
And most of the time, you're gonna find you're removing frequencies that are just not clean and aren't perfect for your audio.
And let's have a listen.
Or, leave a kiss, but in the cup, and I'll not look for wine.
The thirst that from the soul doth rise, doth ask a drink divine, but.
A lot of audio work is this process of listening, adjusting and listening again, and the Parametric Equalizer effect which is often just called Parametric EQ gives intuitive and dynamic controls when reshaping the audio.
