Universal Human Rights Month – December 1-31

The month of December is Universal Human Rights Month, and Human Rights Day is observed on the 10th of December. Both were established in 1948 when the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR). The UDHR was established at the tail end of World War II when the UN felt it crucial to declare and document the inalienable rights that everyone is entitled to as a human being — regardless of race, gender, religion, sexuality, language, political or other opinion, national or social origin, class, birthplace, or status. Now, more than ever, we must stand up for and defend these rights.

AIDS Awareness Month – December 1-31

World AIDS day is the 1st of December and the whole month is dedicated to celebrating the progress we’ve made with access and treatment, commemorating those who have passed on, and raising awareness around the HIV/AIDS epidemic and the importance of being tested and knowing your status. As a business you can participate by raising awareness or consider donating to a reputable charity foundation like the Elton John AIDS Foundation which is dedicated to preventing infections, fighting the stigma, and providing treatment to those in need.

National Cocoa Day (U.S.) – December 13

No matter what type of business you have, asking an engaging question like “are you a marshmallow or no marshmallow kind of person?” in your Instagram Stories or on a Twitter poll could be a fun way to participate in National Cocoa Day. If you have a coffee shop or bakery, you could also consider offering a fun, cocoa-related discount or treat.

National Free Shipping Day (U.S.) – December 14

This day may seem kind of random but hear us out. Going into its fourteenth year, National Free Shipping Day gains more traction every year. Not only do many online retailers offer free shipping on this day (naturally), but for many it’s one of the last shopping days of the year that guarantees delivery by Christmas Eve.

Hanukkah (Global) – December 18-26

We celebrate the first of the winter holidays with Hanukkah, beginning on the 18th of December. The Jewish holiday that celebrates the recovery of Jerusalem lasts eight days and nights and is known as the Festival of Lights. Each night is marked by the lighting of a candle on a menorah, traditional foods, songs, games, and special prayers. It is a celebration of overcoming, perseverance, and togetherness of family and community. Celebrate Hanukkah on your feed by sharing the way you observe the holiday — share recipes, traditions, or even try a new dessert and share a photo.

Winter Solstice (Northern Hemisphere) / Summer Solstice (Southern Hemisphere) – December 21

The winter and summer solstices happen on the 21st of the month worldwide. As we welcome the colder weather here in the Northern Hemisphere, on the other side of the world in the Southern Hemisphere, they are welcoming in summer weather. These solstices happen two times a year — twice in each hemisphere — when the Earth’s poles are at their maximum tilt away from the sun. Whether you celebrate the holiday season with snowfall or sunshine, the solstice provides a perfect opportunity to share your experience with your followers.

Christmas Eve (Global) – December 24

Christmas Eve is traditionally a Christian holiday which marks the end of the Advent season in the religion. Many people, Christian or not, celebrate the holiday as it has grown to represent togetherness, gift-giving, and community gatherings with cozy foods. Whether you celebrate by leaving cookies out for Santa, Rudolph, and the other reindeer or by attending a church service or midnight mass, there are templates in Adobe Express for you.

Christmas Day (Global) – December 25

Like Christmas Eve, Christmas Day is celebrated in religious and secular households alike. Traditions of the day include attending church services, sharing meals with family and friends, exchanging gifts, and watching seasonal movies. A lot of people are quiet online on holidays because they are spending time with loved ones, so don’t feel pressure to post. Engage and participate online as much or as little as you feel is right for you and your business.

Kwanzaa (Global) – December 26

The African-American and Pan-African holiday Kwanzaa is a seven-day cultural celebration that culminates in a feast called Karamu. The holiday celebrates family, community, and culture and was created by activist and professor Dr. Maulana Karenga in 1966. Kwanzaa centers around the Nguzo Saba (The Seven Principles): Umoja (Unity), Kujichagulia (Self-Determination), Ujima (Collective Work and Responsibility), Ujamaa (Cooperative Economics), Nia (Purpose), Kuumba (Creativity), and Imani (Faith). These principles serve as wonderful reminders for us all to pause and reflect on in our own lives.

New Year’s Eve (Global) – December 31

New Year’s Eve is in its usual place as the last date “of note” in December. In many countries, cultures, and religions the marking of a new year brings with it the symbolism of a fresh start. This is a perfect time to reflect on your successes of the year, both personally and professionally, and set your goals for 2023. Consider using a simple template to share them with your audience and ask them to do the same with you.
