Substance Day at GDC 2022 Keynote: Check Out What’s New in Substance 3D!
Discover what’s new and coming up in the world of Substance 3D at Adobe

Substance 3D Modeler
We have an important announcement to make regarding Modeler, the heavily anticipated new modeling and sculpting tool from the Medium team: we will extend the beta to all Substance users this April! Although it’s still early, we want you to experience this original approach to 3D creation for yourself and gather your valuable feedback to steer Modeler towards greatness!
Modeler will require a Windows computer and although VR hardware is not a requirement, we strongly encourage you to add an Oculus Rift or Quest headset to the mix to experience Modeler fully; this will allow you to switch between desktop and VR at any time when creating in the app.

Keep your eyes open for the official announcement next month!
Substance 3D Painter
After last month’s release bringing support for 3DConnexion’s SpaceMouse, Painter’s upcoming update adds Physical Size support. Introduced in Sampler earlier this year, this feature allows materials to tile just right by default when applying them on your model based on their real-world scale.

Other noteworthy improvements include improvements to the color picker, now allowing you to pick a specific channel rather than the final on-screen pixel. ICC integration for color-correct design workflows as well as new height and Bent Normal bakers will complete this release. Oh, and there’s new content as well, with 20 new grunge maps added to the starter assets.
Substance 3D Sampler
The upcoming update this spring will continue to improve your workflow going from real to digital with the addition of the Content-Aware Fill, which is a very ordinary name for a quasi-magical feature. This will allow you to get rid of any unwanted element in your textures and even make materials completely seamless in a few strokes. The feature works across all channels of your material at once.

Other new features include an improved Clone Stamp, better widgets, improvements to the Image to Material feature and much more.
This new spring release will continue the improvements we added in the last few months: a new color picker, SVG support, and a live link with Illustrator, as well as the ability to create complex materials featuring anisotropy, sheen, clear coat, or SSS.
In January we also introduced the Physical Size feature, which allows you to embed real-world size metadata into your materials so that you can display them at their true scale in other applications. We’re planning to leverage Physical Size in all Substance apps as well as third-party software such as CLO, Maya, and more.
Substance 3D Designer
In our upcoming spring release, we’re adding support for USD import and export, allowing you to bring in USD files as building blocks for your parametric modeling graphs, you’ll be able to directly send materials to Stager with the “Send to” feature, and we’re adding a heap of new content, including the Tile Random, Voxel Render, and 3D Noises nodes.
If you haven’t yet played with the Substance model graph, now is your time! This new workflow introduces procedural modeling and parametric meshes to Designer, providing artists with a brand-new way to express their creativity. We’re planning to expand the Substance model graph workflow in future releases!
Substance 3D Stager
Since the release of Stager, we’re continuing our plan to ship often, listen to your feedback, and deliver important features and functionalities to make sure Stager continues to become exactly what you need.
In the upcoming Spring release, we’re adding IBL shadows, a combination of voxel and screen-space shadows calculated from the environment resulting in smooth, fast, and accurate shadows in the real-time viewport. These new shadows combined with the included IBL editor makes lighting scenes a fantastically fast and accurate real-time experience.

We’re also adding a much requested new material panel so you can add, edit, and reuse any material in the scene. Import materials to your project or send them directly from Sampler or Designer.

We are also always refining the rendering side of things and this release will come with important quality improvements. Shadow termination artefacts are a common issue when doing raytracing on low poly models and this new release gets rid of them entirely!
As a bonus, here’s a sneak peek of our Fuzz material prototype, with which you can generate millions of strands of geometry-based fuzz and short hair with parametric fibers, all in real-time.
Substance 3D Assets
With the latest stylized content release, the Substance 3D Assets platform now contains over 13,000 assets and counting! With most assets being fully parametric, and a wide collection of materials, atlases, production-ready models, and lighting assets, you have access to all the ingredients you need to build 3D scenes.

We also have a new collection of over 400 fully parametric Ancient Egypt materials coming up on March 31, and plan to add new content regularly!
Substance 3D Community Assets
The community-powered platform has been growing steadily as well, with hundreds of materials being added to the library. We’re happy to announce that you can now also upload Substance filters, generators and 3D models, with support for FBX and glTF.
Integrations and partnerships
Integrations and partnerships
Substance 3D for Unity
The new revamped Substance 3D Plugin for Unity enables you to load, apply, and tweak Substance parametric materials directly in Unity. We heard your feedback and have rebuilt the Unity plugin from the ground up, resulting in a more stable, faster and overall better experience.
Substance 3D for Unreal Engine 5
We’re also happy to announce that the Substance 3D plugin for Unreal Engine 5 is now available on Adobe Prerelease, allowing you to leverage parametric materials in the latest and greatest from Epic Games.
Substance 3D Material SDK release
Finally, we’re really excited about the public release of the Substance SDK. You can now create your own Substance 3D plugins or leverage parametric materials in your own game, engine, or application for free, no strings attached! Available today on Adobe’s developer platform.
We hope you are as excited as we are and can’t wait to show you more as the Substance 3D tools evolve thanks to your precious feedback.
