Workaround available for Contribute Publishing Server local information disclosure

Summary

Due to an issue with logs generated during product installation, a malicious local user can gain access to the Contribute Publishing Server administrator password set during the installation process.

Solution

Adobe recommends Contribute Publishing Server users change their password to prevent potential information disclosure. The steps for this process are described below.

  1. Launch the Contribute Publishing Server Administration page.
  2. Log in as usual using your password.
  3. Click on the ‘Change Password’ link on the lower right side of the Administration page.
  4. In the ‘Change Password’ dialog, enter your old password, and enter a new, different password. Click OK.
  5. Click the ‘Log Out’ button on the lower left side of the Administration page.

Adobe also recommends that the installation log be deleted. The steps for this process are described below.

  1. Browse to your Contribute Publishing Server installation directory.
  2. Find and open the ‘UninstallerData’ folder (Windows) or the ‘Uninstall Macromedia Contribute Publishing Server’ folder (Linux and Solaris).
  3. Delete the file called installvariables.properties located in the ‘UninstallerData’ or ‘Uninstall Macromedia Contribute Publishing Server’ folder.

Severity rating

Adobe categorizes this as an important issue and recommends affected users apply the above workarounds to their installation.

Details

Due to an issue with logs generated during product installation, a malicious local user can gain access to the Contribute Publishing Server administrator password set during installation. The user would need access to the local file system to exploit this vulnerability.
