Patch available for ColdFusion MX cross-site scripting issue

Release date: February 13, 2007

Vulnerability identifier: APSB07-04

CVE number: CVE-2007-0817

Platform: All platforms

Affected software versions

ColdFusion MX 7.X and ColdFusion MX 6.X

Summary

A vulnerability in ColdFusion’s default error page could allow an attacker to bypass ColdFusion’s cross-site scripting protection. A specially crafted request sent to the ColdFusion server could result in the attacker being able to conduct cross site scripting attacks.

Solution

Adobe recommends ColdFusion users update their software using the installation instructions below.

NOTE: Back up your existing files before making changes. As always, test the changes in a non-production environment before applying the changes to production servers.

To install for ColdFusion MX versions

Replace detail.cfm with the one found in the ColdFusion MX 7 patch file, or in the ColdFusion MX 6.1 patch file. The default locations are below:

  • Windows: {cf_root}\wwwroot\WEB-INF\exception\detail.cfm
  • Unix/Linux: {cf_root}/wwwroot/WEB-INF/exception/detail.cfm

To install for ColdFusionMX for J2EE versions

Replace the ColdFusion Default Site-wide Error Handler page, detail.cfm, with the one found in the ColdFusion MX 7 patch file, or in the ColdFusion MX 6.1 patch file. The default locations are below:

  • Windows: {jrun_root}\servers\SERVERNAME\cfusion-ear\cfusion-war\WEB-INF\exception\detail.cfm
  • Unix/Linux: {jrun_root}/servers/SERVERNAME/cfusion-ear/cfusion-war/WEB-INF/exception/detail.cfm

Severity rating

Adobe categorizes this as a moderate issue and recommends affected users patch their installations.
