Workaround available for Linux and Solaris ColdFusion MX 7 file permissions vulnerability

Release date: April 10, 2007

Vulnerability identifier: APSB07-08

CVE number: CVE-2007-1874

Platform: Linux and Solaris

Affected software versions: ColdFusion MX 7.X

Summary

The file and folder permissions for the Linux and Solaris version of ColdFusion MX 7 can permit non-privileged users to change key program files. Adobe recommends that Linux and Solaris ColdFusion MX 7 customers apply the workaround described below.

Solution

Adobe recommends Linux and Solaris ColdFusion MX 7 customers update their installation using the instructions below:

  1. Stop all ColdFusion services.
  2. Make a backup of your existing verity directory cfroot\verity by copying cfroot\verity to cfroot\verity_backup. For example run cp -fR /opt/coldfusionmx7/verity /opt/coldfusionmx7/verity_backup.
  3. Copy the archive file to cfroot/verity.
  4. Unzip and untar the update archive (Linux or Solaris) into cfroot/verity:
    verity_security_update_solaris.tar.gz
    verity_security_update_linux.tar.gz
  5. The following table lists additional files that should be updated with the permissions listed in the table using the chmod command.  If you have installed the server version in the default location, an example command is:
    chmod 444 /opt/coldfusionmx7/uninstall/.com.zerog.registry.xml

NOTE: It is recommended that the {cf_webroot}/CFIDE/installers/ directory be removed from production servers.  This directory should only be available on development and test servers.

Severity rating

Adobe categorizes this as a moderate issue and recommends affected users update their installations.

Details

The identified vulnerability allows non-privileged users permission to change key program files. A hostile unprivileged user with local access could take advantage of this condition to replace these program files with malicious or harmful code that could read, write, or destroy sensitive data if subsequently run by a privileged user. This issue is not remotely exploitable.
