Karen X. Cheng on going viral and optimizing for fun.

Director Karen X. Cheng’s big aha moments - plus her tip on how to pump up the drama in your video.

“It’s really helpful to edit on the go. I’m oftentimes shooting with my phone. I’ll go in and edit right there. It’s helpful to make sure ‘does this transition work?’ Because then I can just go and reshoot immediately.”

How to make a speed ramp in Adobe After Effects.

A tip from Karen on how a little timing change can give a basic video a whole new feel.

Play with time.

Right-click on a clip in the timeline and choose Time > Enable Time Remapping so you can apply a speed ramp to switch between slow and fast motion to add drama.

Set the ins and outs.

Drag the keyframes on the timeline to define where you want the speed ramp to start and end. Then right-click on each keyframe and choose Keyframe Assistant to select easing options to control the transition of motion between two speeds.

Get creative with easing.

With easing, the motion can start slowly, then accelerate, (Ease in) or vice versa (Ease out). Click the Graph Editor button in the timeline, and the Easy Ease button at the bottom, to show more easing settings for each keyframe.

Fine-tune it.

Drag the handles to finesse the transition of motion and press the spacebar to preview the effect. Repeat this process until you’re happy with the result.
