About Adobe Download Manager

The Adobe Download Manager works directly with Adobe servers to help you manage the process of downloading Adobe® Reader®, Adobe Acrobat® tryout software and other Adobe files. Once it's launched, it will start downloading the software installer to your machine. The Download Manager is only a small file, but it can prevent you from having to start from the beginning should your download process be interrupted, and it offers a level of service not possible with third-party download tools.

Note: You must have administrative access to your computer and 1MB of disk space available to download and install the Download Manager. Additionally, it is best if Windows® products are downloaded on a Windows operating system, and Mac OS products on a Macintosh system.

Windows

System requirements

Operating systems

Microsoft® Windows 98 Second Edition, Windows Millennium Edition, Windows NT® Workstation 4.0 with Service Pack 6, Windows 2000 Professional with Service Pack 2, Windows XP Professional or Home Edition, or Windows XP Tablet PC Edition

Internet Explorer

5.01, 5.5, 6.0, or 6.1

What to expect when using Download Manager

If you have Download Manager already installed and you choose to use it to download Adobe software, clicking Download will download Adobe software and then install it.

If you do not have Download Manager and you choose to use it to download Adobe software, after clicking Download, you may receive a dialog box prompting you with a choice. Select Open or Run rather than Save. Note that not all Web browsers give you this choice. If you save the file, you will then need to locate it and double-click it to proceed with the installation process.

What to do when your download is interrupted

If your network connection is lost while downloading, you can restart the download where you left off. Simply re-establish your network connection and manually launch the Adobe Download Manager from Start > Programs > Adobe > Download Manager.

On many versions of Windows, wininet (Windows networking library) does not let the dial-up connection know that a file transfer is happening. The dial-up connection then times out and disconnects.

To stop your dial-up connection from disconnecting during a download, go to your Network and Dial-up Connections control panel. In the options tab, set "Idle time before hanging up" to "never."

If your system shuts down while a download is pending, the Download Manager will launch automatically when you restart your machine.

The Adobe Download Manager uses the settings in your Internet Control Panel. If you use Internet Explorer and can access the Web, your settings are correct. If you use Netscape exclusively, you may not have set up your Internet Control Panel. In this case, you will need to configure your Internet Control Panel with settings appropriate for your Dial-up or LAN connection (including proxy settings).

About download speed

The Download Manager will neither improve nor hinder download speed in comparison with a normal download through your browser. Download speeds will be affected by variations in Internet traffic, server loads, and other network or machine issues such as LAN traffic.

Certain virus-scanning software may slow your download as much as four times. If you are experiencing a download rate that is substantially slower than what you normally experience, you may want to disable any virus-checking software until the file is completely downloaded. Once it is downloaded, turn your virus-scanning software back on and scan the file before installation.

How to remove the Adobe Download Manager

Although the Adobe Download Manager can be reused to download other files from Adobe in the future, you can remove it from your system by using the Add/Remove Programs Control Panel.

If you do not know the Username or Password required by your proxy server, contact your network administrator.

On Windows XP, Adobe Download Manager becomes unresponsive after entering proxy information.

If after entering your proxy information the Download Manager becomes unresponsive, simply let it finish. Once the download completes, the Download Manager will function normally. You may do work in other applications while the download is progressing.
