Blalack Middle School

Daily news broadcasts

Barry Rose, BEAR News Advisor at Blalack Middle School, oversees sixth through eighth grade students as they use Adobe® Visual Communicator® software to produce daily news broadcasts. Students are divided into five teams of four — one team for each day of the week. The daily news broadcast mainly consists of announcements, lunch menus, and teacher spotlights. These are shown to the entire student body and school staff via the school's TV system, as well as posted on the school's website for parental viewing.

"Visual Communicator is an awesome program that is easy to use, the 'news reporters' love using it, and the student body finds our broadcasts much more interesting to watch. Also, we have had many great comments from parents in our community." says Rose.

According to Rose, the three most valuable features of Visual Communicator for the students are "its ease of use, its publishing features, and its overlapping trays." Visual Communicator's simple and intuitive interface allows Rose's students to learn the basics of the program in very little time. Its publishing options are accessed through a comprehensive step-by-step wizard, and its action trays can be placed in any position in the script and overlapped easily for tight transitions.

The next step

In the future, Rose plans to use Visual Communicator to create some lessons to place on his website. In the meantime, he and his students are continually trying new things and exploring the software.
