Gordon Parks

From school videos to cable TV

Reaching out

David Balaban, television production teacher at Gordon Parks Academy, uses Adobe® Visual Communicator® software to teach television production to over 150 fourth, fifth, and sixth grade students each year. The students produce a weekly television show and use Visual Communicator to record the student-hosted segments. According to Balaban, "Visual Communicator allows students to produce professional-quality news and informational videos with very little training." In addition to its unbelievable ease of use, Balaban chose Visual Communicator because of its chroma key capabilities, teleprompter, and video effects.

Weekly cable television shows

Under the watchful eye of Balaban, the students of Gordon Parks Academy produce a weekly cable television show that is shown in 300,000 homes in 42 northern New Jersey towns. Students can draft scripts in Microsoft Word and easily bring the scripts into Visual Communicator's teleprompter or simply type directly into the teleprompter. After assembling the transitions and graphics to match the script, the students use the V-screen. "Visual Communicator's V-screen chroma key technology allows the students to create the illusion that they are in an environment like a news room or on location outside," adds Balaban.

A variety of uses

In the future, Balaban plans to expand the use of Visual Communicator throughout the school to include in-class projects such as video book reports. For now, the Gordon Parks Academy weekly television show is taking northern New Jersey by storm and winning awards. "This program has made a big impact on the lives of our students and the community by allowing young children to experience the excitement of being real newscasters and has contributed greatly to the image of our school as a state-of-the-art television facility," says Balaban.
