Distance learning with video

Bridging distances with video

Steve Linthicum, professor at Sierra College, has been using Visual Communicator® software to produce his distance learning video courses over the past year. The simple drag-and-drop functionality of Visual Communicator combined with its professional effects and graphics make it the perfect tool for web-based learning presentations. Linthicum adds, "Visual Communicator is easy to use, has neat features I can incorporate into my lectures, and outputs quality video productions that I can produce without a great deal of effort."

Already over 240 students have completed Linthicum's classes, and he expects many more in the future. "This semester my student load is over 350 students. Prior to the implementation of Visual Communicator, I would have been lucky to handle 120 students," he explains. "Visual Communicator is an excellent product for online lecture presentations."

Except for a webcam or digital camcorder, Visual Communicator comes with everything needed to easily create professional presentations, including a microphone and green screen. Linthicum purchased an inexpensive digital camcorder to use with Visual Communicator and used a school laptop he had obtained as the result of a grant he wrote last year. All that was left to make videos, according to Linthicum, "was a willingness to stand in front of the camera."

A variety of uses

Linthicum has already demonstrated what a useful tool Visual Communicator has been for Sierra College, its professors, and its distance learning classes. He plans to write and apply for future grants to purchase Visual Communicator and video production equipment for other campus department programs. Adding more distance learning courses will allow the college to enroll more students per professor, yet allow professors to keep the personal connection of a face-to-face lecture. According to Linthicum: "Visual Communicator provides an effective way for students to view my lectures. I cannot adequately express the benefits, both personally and those received by my students, as the result of utilization of this product. It is simply outstanding."
