Creative photography techniques can turn ordinary photo shoots into extraordinary ones. Discover techniques and experiment with angles, depth, crops and scale to create edgy and interesting photoshoots.
Setting up your photo shoot
For your next photo shoot, try adjusting these elements:
- Angles: Try framing your subject from different angles rather than photographing it straight-on. A low angle is an excellent technique for making your composition look larger-than-life. It also helps eliminate distracting backgrounds.
By contrast, aerial photography makes your subject smaller relative to its surroundings, and turns the ground into a backdrop. - Scale: Like angles, scale lets you enlarge or shrink your subject in relation to its surroundings. Taking a picture of a human next to a towering tree, for instance, will draw attention to both the awe of nature and the relative smallness of the person.
You can also use “forced perspective” to create size illusions. If you shoot from a low angle while setting a person far back in a scene, you can make blades of grass in the foreground appear the same size as the human in the background. These optical illusions can create playful compositions. - Depth: A shallow depth of field brings the foreground into sharp focus while blurring the background. When you use a shallow depth of field, you can draw the viewer's attention to the subject of your photo while maintaining a pleasing composition.
- Crops: Close cropping creates an abstract effect, highlighting patterns and geometry in the details rather than providing a complete picture. When used correctly, zooming and cropping can create a striking and intriguing photo.
