“A portrait is not made in the camera but on either side of it.” — Edward Steichen
As a photographer, you’re responsible for coming up with photoshoot ideas for modelling sessions. During the photoshoot, your model will look to you for guidance and direction, so make sure you already have ideas and poses planned.
Decide on the type of modelling session
The most common categories of modelling are fashion, commercial, corporate, fitness and glamour. Your photoshoot will be determined by the kind of project you’re working on.
Corporate photoshoots, for example, use a more formal and professional approach, while glamorous or high fashion photoshoots leave room for more creativity and experimentation.
Preparing the photoshoot
Once you've decided on the kind of modelling session, you can start thinking about poses and themes. Think about the props you’ll need, the location of the shooting and whether you’ll need your own light or if you’ll be using natural light.
Creating an inspiration board can also be useful. You can share it with your models and assistants ahead of time to get everyone on the same page. In any modelling session, having a few ideas in mind will help keep the process moving smoothly.

These techniques and ideas will help you think of creative ways to shoot your next project:
- Use mirrors to create creative angles and perspectives.
- Take nighttime pictures with neon lights.
- Find reflections in windows, water and other surfaces. Incorporate them to make an interesting composition.
- Make your shot richer by adding colourful smoke.
- Experiment with vibrant colours, such as neon clothing, makeup and hair.
- Photograph a model in half-light to play with light and shadow.
- Consider adding props such as umbrellas, fairy floss or balloons. Be sure to keep them in theme with the photoshoot.
- Make your photos stand out by shooting in unexpected locations, like bookshops and grocery stores.
